Not quite sure why there touting this as new information. If you read Sota Omoigui's pain drug handbook, he addresses this in his Law of Pain. And he wrote this quite a while ago

I'm not a redhead, but I do have extremely pale skin, blue eyes and (naturally) very pale blonde hair. I have similar problems with anesthetic and pain. I was told years ago by a doctor that people who are more fair in general have this issue. I didn't realize that a study had isolated it to redheads in particular.

I call BS on this one. Back when I had hair it was red. I have never really felt that much pain before. I only took pain meds for 3 days after a kidney transplant.
