I understand I have bad English. I understand I am not the most suave guy here too and why I was confused with saying other things, in my heart I want to help people but I didn’t know why but I had a sit down with a old wise friend of mine (he is in his 40s). He told me about the pros and cons and in my heart it seemed right for me, like something I would get up in the mornings and say “I can’t wait to get to work” for. But since I was here, people have been callous to me. I had to struggle all my life to be here, I come from a poor family with almost no prospects and I was diagnosed with two mental disorders yet I moved above all of them. I am well knowledgeable in history of American and the world. I speak bits and parts of German, Spanish, and Chinese. I could’ve chosen the easy way and took a better path than EMT but I didn’t cause in my heart, the satisfaction of knowing I helped someone in the bit makes me live even though my spirit would be crushed . I don’t even have the money myself to go to college for training but thanks to my manners and intelligence I am getting a full scholarship to college for it. So before you go say “I don’t mean to offend but….” just keep your words to yourself and be courteous to me and leave me be.

I think you'll find that most people in our community are understanding and accepting of the diversity among out visitors.

Whereas in the offline world people first judge you based on your appearances, in an online setting you'll find people judge you first on your writing. You can be the nice, intelligent, and hard working, but if you can't communicate effectively you'll face many obstacles in life.

Having said that, it's critical that as both a person and EMT that you employ the "MacGuyver method." MacGuyver would use whatever resources were available to make the best out of a crappy situation.

If you have difficulty with written English, then why not use the FireFox browser that has a built-in spell check? As an EMT you'll be in situations that push you both mentally and physically, and it's critical that you have the skills and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done. In this case it appears as though you struggle with basic grammar and usage. Use resources available (FireFox browser, spell check, etc.) to review a post before hitting the reply button.

You'll find that most everyone in life comes from a crappy background. You seem like a relatively young guy, most likely having just left high school a year or two ago. If you ultimately decide to work in EMS, you'll be amazed at the some of the trials and tribulations of your patients. Very few people in America get a "free ride" these days, and every single person I know has a sob story of sorts.

Take some time and make a list of what you hope to accomplish in life. Now you need to figure out how to get there. The only way you can accomplish your goals is if you perservere and work hard to better yourself. It sounds silly, but being an effective communicator is an essential trait in Emergency Medical Services and any job really. Do what you need to do improve yourself, and never give up.

Good luck!

thank you, as i said, my oral skills are good and i will look at firefox for my spelling and grammar next time. i understand where you are comeing from, but in my heart all i want to do is help people. my ultimate goal in life is just to be the guy in town everyone can say hi and have a good time around, the nice guy in town to be simple. all i want is for others to be ok and all. and i am still in high school, at the age of 18.

First I honor your determination of attempting to better yourself. I am the first to critique the basic use of the English language here. No, I am not expecting perfect grammar but as a profession we must represent and present ourselves as a professional. Again, one of the best way is by the communications we use.

I admit, I use spell check most of the time. After long shifts, or posting in the wee hours of the morning, my spelling is not the best as well. Usually, it is not the difficult medical words rather it is the simplistic ones that I tend make mistakes on.

Part of being in EMS is being able to have a good self esteem. One has be to be able to withstand criticism (which occurs daily in EMS), verbal abuse and get over the thought self denial. You speak way more languages than I do, apparently are intelligent enough to obtain a scholarship which is not itself an easy task.

Again, many (including myself) may come across rough and caustic; but the emphasis is to be able to overcome most obstacles. Yes, you probably had a rough childhood, and again respect you for attempting in moving upward. Remember though; each person has a had some form of difficulty; degrees is really irrelevant rather it is how one handles it and then what they do afterwards is the main point.

I wish you the best of success, be persistent and study, you will go far... no matter what your goals and dreams are.

Perhaps Rid should quit judging while he's ahead, "I tend make mistakes on" Good Grief!!!

Time, dedication and practice

Ulrik, I know with time, dedication and practice, you will do an outstanding job. As a few people had said already this is a job that can test about who you are and be able to stand up and get the job done. Just remember that with this profession there will be always something new to learn, just keep focused, remember never forget your roots!! Good luck! P.s. Congratulations on your scholarship, that is outstanding! :)

This being only perhaps the most glaring of several errors! :D

Firefox isn't the only browser to consider. If you prefer IE, you can add a spell checker module to it. The Safari browser on Macintosh spell checks, too, and I would assume its PC cousin is the same. Be advised, however, that while some browsers can spell check, no browser (that I know of) can check your grammar. If you really want to check your grammar, I would suggest composing your message in a word processing program that has a spelling and grammar checker. Write your message, check it, correct it, read it to make sure it says what you want to say, copy it, and paste it into the message box here and post it. However, judging by your posts in this thread so far, I would not say your grammar is particularly worse than the average being posted here regularly (see Ridryder's earlier message for some examples! :P). My biggest suggestion would have been to break up your first message into a few smaller paragraphs, for example.

it is the simplistic ones that I tend make mistakes on.

“Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.”
Why do I love it when I catch rid in a grammar or spelling mistake.. god help me I do love it so!

You got me!... I need to quit posting after the 36 hour shifts.

I to have trouble with the English writing language, I read and understand it perfectly.

I have good schooling and I had a very good career in Europe. I did not work as an EMT but working for the airline industry. I speak four languages; I have been on the career ladder and quite up there, even with me being a bad speller.

The point I am trying to make is that, because you might have trouble with spelling dos not equal less intelligent. People like me learn to live around our handicap. We have to work harder to make sure our written skills come out as good as we can.

I understand some people get very irritated when they see bad spelling or grammar. I don’t have that problem, because I don’t see the mistakes. :-P

That way I see it is, I must rather been called out on my spelling, then called out of not been a nice/good person. I know I have the personally and brain to become a good EMT, and I don’t see how me being a bad speller will make me less professional.

I would LOVE if I could just sit down and write, without having to worry about my mistakes.

I know this thread is not about me, but as a fellow bad speller I would just try to explain, that it is not something we do for fun, it really suck being a bad speller.

Have a good day all of you :)

That is fine and good except in a Court of Law. Especially when one is attempting to disprove your accountability. Yes, they will project or enlarge your PCR and circle the mistakes, spelling errors and ask "what does this mean?" to insinuate that you lack credibility and education.

We all need to improve and make sure that we attempt to give our best forward all the time.

Ulrik, two tips.

1. If someone's comment offends you, blow it off, leave the thread, it's just the internet. We all stick our foot into our mouths occasionally and the love seems to get tougher some days than others. IOf you casn, get the gist , then leave the rhetoric. You might return and re-read it an other time and see what you can get out of it.

2. When you have something to post, preview it or write it in WORD or something, look it over before you post it, unless like me you don't care (too much).B)
