The question on left vs right is largely dependent on whether you're looking at the gurney from the head or the feet.

Not quite.

I have seen stretchers with reverse handle configurations. Never understood why, but they do exist.
 
On the Stryker power cots, the manual release is on the right side of the stretcher as you are facing it while removing it from the bus. On the manual cots it could be on either side.
