Hey,

Well I didnt relize how hard it is to get a job, I live in Tennessee and applied in 3 differnt places and no luck yet, there either not hiring or wont be for several months... its just really discourging, but any 1 else have the same problem.

I'd say a lot of America is in the same boat as you. It took me about a year to find a job. The economy sucks and sometimes even in healthcare.

Contact me letting me know what area of TN you are in. I know of 4 places doing agilities soon. Send me a PM, I will put you in contact with some people.

Yup, everyone has the same problem. Very few places are hiring anywhere.
I am waiting around until September when my local service will have openings.

There are several places here in TN hiring for EMT-IV, since they are our minimum ambulance level and can do more than the average EMT-B. The problem here in TN with EMT-IV employment is finding a full-time position. These are usually reserved for IV's that have worked with a service either PRN or Part-Time for a while.

Ya, sounds like the same every where ... Find something that will get you entry level and get some experience. Sometimes looking at casinos, parkes etc... that look for EMT's is a good start.

Well i guess ill do what I can, till i go back to paramedic school and hopfully by then I can find a job.....

Get ready to go back to class for a tiny bit. They announced at the directors symposium that EMT-Advanced will be replacing EMT-IV in Fall of 2011. You will be given the opportunity to bridge up or lose your IV and become an EMT-B again. I believe they are wanting to phase out IV all together within a year and a half of Fall 2011. You do get some new skills though.

The latest Approved clinical practice got us closer

Now all they have to do is train you in nitrous, narcan, and a few other things.

And IO's ive heard this while i was in school, now i got to figure out to reinroll back in school specfically for this.

It will be handled more like a PHTLS type class that lasts a couple of weeks as opposed to something like EMT school was. The decision for IO's and 12 lead transmission by EMT-Advanced is still something that is being heavily debated by the powers that be in TN.

Question to Rob....

I was under the impression that EMT-IV was the lowest certification of EMT that practices in most areas in Tennessee. Does that mean that the state will be moving to a minimum of EMT-Advanced for most services?

No, Emt-Iv are 2nd up, emt-b is the lowest, Iv is same s Basic except with Iv skills..... dont make much sense im NR a basic and SR Iv

From what I understand, it works like this.

EMT-B's do not ride on our trucks. The minimum ambulance level for EMT is "EMT-IV". If you are an EMT-IV when fall 11 comes around, you are going to be offered a choice.

1. Take the extra course, bridge up to EMT-Advanced which adds to your
skill set.

2. Do not take the extra course, and be forced to lose your IV and become an
EMT-B with no more skills than a first responder in most areas.

EMT-B is more like a first responder here with 1 or 2 extra skills. Our first responders have been able to do things like drop combitubes for quite some time.

The minimum level they are going to allow on an ambulance will be EMT-Advanced. They are in the process of doing Gap Analysis for the creation of
the bridge course to see what is lacking for EMT-IV. We are already very close to the EMT-Advanced model except for Nitrous and narcan. The debate over IO for Non paramedic is almost as cut throat as the debate for 12 lead application and transmission by non paramedic.. A lot of people are enraged by such a thing, while others agree it can and should be within the scope.

I will ask my friend about that, he is a state board member and will get back to you.

Anyone seen or taken a bridge class?

I have not heard of anyone who has bridged from EMT-IV to AEMT... Anyone?
