I need a little advice about moving out of state. I recently recieved my emt B in SC (about 5 months ago) and have been volunteering since then but have landed no jobs. Im orignally from illinois and recently ive been approached with the opprotunity to move back. What process or processes do I need to go through in order to work in a different state? Is it possible to get recert with out taking another class?

You need to talk to the agency that certifies in Illinois. The criteria varies wildly. In Washington, you can apply for repricocity and challenge the test or retake the class. In some cases they may require that you are signed off on your practical skills by a state approved evaluater.

Best course of action is always to go to the source and ask the agency what they will require.

Illinois is governed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. They recently switched from a state test to the NREMT, meaning that to get a license you have to challenge the NREMT exam. I am not sure at the basic level, but for a medic they require a letter of good standing from your present medical director.

The process is called reciprocity. This link will take you to the exact form you need to fill out.

This link will take you to the right page on IDPH website.

Hope this helps.

IL accepts NREMT. As well, I have heard, they will accept other states. As far as licensure goes, IL is one of the best states. I have been an EMT-B in IL (where I am from) for a bunch of years now.

They also have one of the most stringent ConEd requirments. 120 hours of ConEd every 4 years. That's a lot.

So, you're saying they'll take just about anyone?

They have the good reputation of accepting almost anyone. IL accepted NREMT even tho they are not "a NREMT state". Call them and ask.

No, I was just kidding. But they are a NREMT state now. It changed a year ago or so. I just went through their reciprocity. I used to be an EMT-I there and then we moved out of the state. We're moving back in about a month and so I just did the whole process. It was pretty painless. But then you have to do the system entry process wherever you may be. I am in Central Illinois, so I am only familiar with their process.

Thanks for the great advice!:P I have already passed the NREMT...so i guess my next step is to go through the repricocity process. Thanks again...you all have been very helpful
