Hey everyone,

I'm a university student in Alberta. Lately I've been seriously considering becoming an EMT instead of sticking to my chosen field (Teaching).
Basically I'm not sure if I should take the course or not. I don't know anyone in the field so I thought I'd come here to ask a few questions?

I've worked in a walk-in medical clinic for about 6 years now, and I've always been interested in E.M.S
I've been thinking that I could take an EMR course this summer and be done by October. Then in a year or so take an EMT course, while still working on my current degree.

Has anyone here taken an EMR or EMT course in Calgary?
If so, which programme is better? I've heard good and bad things about a lot of them, and I'm at a loss as to which to take.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Welcome to EMTLife!

Try to join a local volunteer department. through them, do some ride time, and see how you like it. Taking the classes are useful, but you have to be the right kind of person to be in this field. By doing some ride time pre-class, you can sort of get an expectation on what you'll be held to in the back of the ambulance.

I wish you the best of luck!

I'll look into it, Thanks!!

Can you do both? I'm not sure what your college schedule is like, but if you could graduate with both types of certifications that would let you be flexible in your future career choices.

I'm not saying that because I'm biased (being a teacher), but because I got the same advice to keep up a double major so I would have 2 career options. It turned out to be excellent advice.

I'm considering doing this now.
I think I'll do the EMR during the summer, take a semester off to do the EMT course then maybe do the EMT-P after I get my BEd.
Being an EMT can't look bad on my BEd resume right?

Not sure how things are for public school teachers where you are, but here (US) it would look good. Particularly if you were teaching some sort of science or wanting to work in a career oriented high school (what used to be called vocational schools). The last place I taught, they had a guy who used to be a paramedic teaching in the Allied Health program for kids who wanted to be nursing assistants.

I'm contemplating the first responder part because I take kids on field trips, sometimes to remote locations, and they inevitably hurt themselves. I don't want to be helpless or do something that would make things worse while we wait for someone to come. My administrators right now are positive about me and possibly other teachers getting some training.

Can you ask some teachers near you? I'm sure they'd have a clearer answer.

EMR Courses in Alberta

Hey there! I am a registered EMR in Alberta (Red Deer) and am going to go on to the EMT-A level soon. Are you in Calgary? If so, AHASTI is a good choice for your EMR needs. I took the course through AHASTI in Red Deer, and was blown away at the amount of information that they pumped into us in a short time. I recently took, and passed my ACP (Alberta College of Paramedics) exams, and I can only say - preparation is everything. While at the exam site, I talked to a lot of people that were taking the exams for a second time, due to the fact that their school of choice didn't prepare them for it.

I am looking hard at AHASTI for my EMT-A schooling, sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, I am not eligible for student funding, so some work must come between courses.

Good luck on your choice!
Derek

Hi Everyone,
Congrats Derek, we like to hear and see that our student are doing well at the ACP exam.

Shaz58 - If you haven't already, take a look at the Alberta College of Paramedics website. They have a complete list of all the schools that offer the EMS program in Alberta. Also you will find all the info on the registration exam.

If you have any questions about our particular programs, feel free to ask!!
