Thanks

You'll hear conflicting things regarding the companies based upon the person giving the opinion.

I work at AMR LACo, currently going to medic school with people from McCormick, Care, and Schaefer, everyone seems to like their respective companies.

Personally, I'm not a fan of AMR here, but I feel it's more the problem of the entire EMS system here, LA County is garbage in my opinion.

If you want great 911 experience Care is the best choice. They are getting really big and they are just getting better.

I loved Care when I was there. My medic partner is a McCormick employee as well and loves it. Schaefer I have run with at my PT FD gig and they seem ok. Quote from a Gerber employee "They are the devil!".

Run as far away as possible from Gerber. They are about to lose the Torrance contract anyways.

Thanks for the responses, I certainly value everyone's input. No surprise that Gerber hasn't gotten any love, I've yet to hear anyone speak highly of them.

I heard that CARE is under major investigation nowadays.

I have worked several people from Gerber and the opinions ranged from "it was great" to "never. again. ever."

Schaefer as well has a rep for working you till you cry, then tossing you.

I heard nothing good about AMR in Texas, same goes here. Several colleagues worked there and hated it. Even as sup's.

McCormick has the best rep from what I have heard, only known a few employees and they reported very strict, and sometimes difficult regulations (e.g. "make the 12 mile response in 8 minutes across town in heavy traffic or else...")

Bottom line, in LA County if you work 911 and you are not FD, then you will be a cot jockey.

Quick question. Why is Care under investigation?

Not to hijack the thread, and keep in mind that EMS is worse than high school with drama, BUT from what I hear there are investigations being conducted on the premise that CARE was bribing local officials to keep certain ordinances and statutes in place which in reality, kept CARE in the money. Funny thing is, all of this came to light just after the big guy died and CARE was sold. :glare:

Wow I had no idea. Who are they tring to bribe I wonder. Ive heard thar Care is going hard right now after new contracts, and they are also going after getting paramedics. LOL we should start a new thread. What have you heard.

As an EMT, you will run IFTs only at Care for the first 6 months or year I believe. I have friends that work at McCormick and they like it a lot, I know a supervisor there and he speaks highly of the management (ie very forward thinking, up to date with new rigs and equipment). Schaefer's 911 side is pretty crazy, the scheduling will leave you ragid, you won't have a life, working every other day with a 48 off every 2 weeks. On the flip side of that, Schaefer EMT's make quite a bit of money by the end of the year. Take your pick, as someone else stated, no matter where you go, you will be a gurney jockey. Apply to each and go with who hires you. I'd stay away from Gerber though, for reasons stated above.

911 in LA County is a lost cause unless you are fire-based. Honestly, I would either move or make the commute to Kern County. No fire ems and all the ambulances are 911 units. Its much better when the medic running the call is the one on the ambulance. Just my honest opinion.
