Just need a few questions answered

Hello all. I am a 3rd year nursing student. I am looking to take my school's EMT class this summer. I know there are two parts to the exam, cognitive and psychomotor, but the psychomotor portion is what is freaking me out a little bit. Is it all that hard, or have I just been lied to? Are the proctors a little lenient on the performance that you give? I also know that I would have to renew my certification, but I will probably not work MUCH as an EMT, and I know that you have to if you want to renew. I am an ER tech, would this be considered working as an EMT?

I think most people find the psychomotor portion to be easy. It's strictly algorithms that is the same for every patient scenario. You can view directly all the skill tests sheets from the NREMT website here.

In my area, the skill testing is done at your school prior to receiving a course completion certificate. If that is the case in your area too, then they'll probably tell you exactly what they are looking for and how they want you to do it.

Click here on what is required to recert your NREMT. In many areas, I believe it is not necessary to keep your NREMT cert. States will have their own certs, which is what you require to work, and it seems like a lot of them have less requirements than the NREMT. In my State, which is California, you only need 24 hours of CEs (continued education/hours of class) with skill verification (usually included in EMT Refresher course, can be done by your company, or you can pay about $80 I think to do it at a private educational company that offers it) every 2 years. I let my NREMT lapse several years ago.

Thank you very much for that information! I had talked to someone who had taken the course previously, and they say that the psychomotor portion is completed during classes. So that makes it better for me so I won't have to drive to the middle of no where to do it haha.
 
The school in our area is now doing basic psychomotor portion on video. You practice, record and then the instructor watches later. You pick a random skill out of a hat to test on at the end. Much less stressful.
