Ok so long story short my boyfriend is a EMT, on his way to paramedic, I am clueless on my future career, he keeps saying I would really enjoy being an EMT, I am in a career planning class in college, we took a career test with 90% accuracy and EMT came up number two.

So my question is it, well I don't really have a question. Should I go on and proceed with this, I don't want to copy boyfriend on a career choice. And also how would I go about getting into the EMT world, just to get another point of view. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also I have another thread that I would really like more opinions on.

Hi :)
I'm Achilles
I'll add more in a minute.....

Awesome can't wait to read it.

Take a look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics' occupational outlook for EMTs and paramedics.

Several pros:
-- Helping people
-- Not a lot of educational experience required to start
-- Employment is growing (and fast, at least, except in California)

Several cons:
-- Not a lot of career progression unless you go FD or obtain more education (e.g. RN, PA, etc.)
-- Wages are not commensurate with the risk (in comparison to equally dangerous professions, EMTs and paramedics make less money)
-- There is lots of risk. Lots.
-- You are never (at least, not yet, in the US) practicing on the merits of your own license. You're a physician extender subject to protocols.

What were the other few top results?

Alrighty, sorry about that.
Have you researched What it will be like as an EMT, I don't want to turn you away or scare you but there are some things you should be aware of.

High burn out rate,
EMT's see a lot of stuff. Some people have a high tolerance, some things it's hard to get over (eg. Pediatric death.)
The pay is good depending on what your standard of "good pay" are.
Possibly. If you do decide to do this, chances are you won't be working with your boyfriend. There's more i will tell you the rest in 30 years.
Bye ;)

1.Radiologist
2.EMT
5.Military Enlisted
8.Bartender(do not know where that came from, not even 21 yet, must be the wrong 10%)

There were some more health care ones I just don't remember, I think physical therapist was one, already looked into.

I left the test at work, but those are the ones I remember out of 10. My number one interest the test says in health care, that is true. And I have looked into so many careers in that field too.

I have looked into it, my boyfriend has been an EMT for a year, we talk about the job a lot, even before he was an EMT, when he was in class I helped him with his homework, I've seen the pictures(yes I know its not like the real thing), I've heard the stories.

I'm not in it to work with him I just want to do something I will enjoy.

I absolutely love my job, but for the sake of exploring your options, check out nursing. Good pay, lots of variety specialty wise, lots of options for advancement. Good luck!

You can ask local services for a ride along. Honestly if you think healthcare is your thing, you have a lot of options.

CT / Sono techs make decent money and is not a bad option to explore.
Nursing is always up there, much better pay, benefits, and room to advance.
Physical therapy is a good career too.

EMS is something that you have to do because you just really love EMS. The pay is not great (especially compared to all the above careers I listed), the benefits usually aren't great, and the scheduling can be less than optimal. It can be a rewarding career and some people fall in love with it. Do a ride out and if you don't think this is absolutely what you want then look into something else.

Additionally, since EMS education is fairly short, you can always volunteer. It's (potentially) a great way to bolster your resume as far as demonstrating health care experience.
