Intoxication/Use of NPA

Hi all,

I'm looking for two things:

1) Journal articles/information (or similar) on the use of the NPA in either intoxicated individuals and/or in individuals in general
2) Pre-hospital care for intoxicated individuals

I know that there's really not too much that a basic can do for someone intoxicated, but I'm hoping to learn just a little bit, seeing as a lot of the calls I respond to involve them. The EMT-B book didn't really go into it to the level that I want.

If anybody has any links, or can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

I don't know if that is a helpful article, I just thought I'd help you look instead of studying for math class The article looks pretty basic.

That cites "Allison K, Porter K. Nasopharyngeal airways: an under-utilised pre-hospital resource. Pre-Hospital Immediate Care 2000;4 (4) :192–3.", which I'm at a loss as to how to find. The journal has apparently merged with another BMJ journal; searching that journal's archives gives http://emj.bmj.com/search?fulltext=nasopharyngeal+airway&submit=yes&x=0&y=0

which includes a letter questioning the rarity of intracranial placements, but I don't have the relevant subscription.

Why are you looking for info on NPAs?

The information in the EMT-B book on the use of NPAs (along with practically everything else) was seriously lacking. I'd like to do some more research on it individually so that I can have a better understanding of them, indications, contraindications, etc.. The very cut and dry cases (unconscious but won't accept OPA or head injury) are pretty easy to figure out, but it's those other cases that I would like more information and education on. (I hope that makes sense. It's tough to get some stuff across online :glare
