My son is going to be a dragon for Halloween. I am just about done with the costume. I finished the majority of the sewing tonight and just have a little bit of hand sewing to do to finish it up. Well, the boy asked me about his wings and I hadn't planned on making any. Now I have to figure out how to do it. So, does anyone have any ideas on how I could go about making dragon wings? (Think of bat wings for the shape.)

I know I could make a "frame" out of wire and then cover it with hose to make them. That is how they make the fairy wings. I just don't think that would look very ferocious, and would be a rather tame looking dragon.

It all depends on the shape and color of the wings when you're done with them. I could see that looking cool, but I might be embellishing it a bit much in my head..

Paper Mache? Messy, but you could paint them multiple dragony colors...

Or get sheet metal and cut it into scale shapes and weld it, that is if you can weld and have access to cheap sheet metal.

.

Do you think paper mache would be durable enough? Wire mesh or something?

-ps-that is pretty cute! and really sweet of you!

Wire frame covered in cloth?

BTW- it seems like just yesterday you were making last years costume!

Just correct him. Dragons clearly do not have wings. Tell him to read the appropriate Wikipedia page before making such an outrageous claim again.

Dragons in the game World of Warcraft have wings.

I had to do this for a class play when my boys were little. I used a wire coat hanger for structure only at the top. Then hot glued fake leather to the coat hanger. The beauty of the fake leather is you don't need to hem it and you can make those lovely shredded looking bat type wings. By the way, be careful. If you accidently sew over the coat hanger, it really pops that needle when it breaks.. (ask me how I know that one!!!!! :P

Almost everything in WoW Has wings, Except the playable characters >_>

In that case, tell him there's a reason all the dragons in WoW get slaughtered by kids just short of puberty. Dragons are so last-year. If he really wants to be cool, he should be Thrall.

Thrall coo'.

That should actually work, just bring the wire frame to multiple points. Fairy wings would be white and rounded (Like the angel wings I have done for my daughter before). Dragon wings would be pointed with dark colors and nice shading.
