Ok, I have no idea how to introduce myself so I'm just going to give it a shot. I am looking for advice/help in preparing for my EMS career. I would like to work my way up the chain and become a Flight Medic someday but I don't know where to start. Does anyone have any ideas?

There are a few flight medics on here. They will be able to steer you in the right direction.

By the way, our names are very similar :P

Not to be rude, but short & simple.

Plan A:

Get general education including as much Science, Psychology, English, etc. Go to an accredited (COEMSP) college. Obtain EMT, immediately enroll into Paramedic program.
Work >5 years in agressive ground EMS, obtaining Critical Care Paramedic and all the other associated credentials (trauma, cardiac, etc..)

Get to really know and work with some of the flightmedics and then apply. Good luck <1% make it.

or.....

Go get your BSN and RN, work in agressive ICU and ER for > 5 years. Obtain Paramedic and apply after credentials of CCRN, CFRN, CEN, etc....

and there are other many other options. Most include a lot more additional schooling and education as well clincal experience.

Good luck,

Ok, I hate to sound ignorant but I'm completely lost when you start talking with all the abbreviations.

From Rid's post:

EMS-Emergency Medical Service
EMT-Emergency Medical Technician
COEMSP-Committee on Accreditation of EMS Educational Programs
BSN- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing
RN- Registered Nurse
ICU- Intensive Care Unit
ER- Emergency Room
CCRN- Critical Care RN
CFRN- Certified Flight RN
CEN- Certified Emergency Nurse

Think that's it...

In order of appearance,

EMT = Emergency Medical Technician
EMS = Emergency Medical Services
BSN = Bachelor's degree in Nursing
RN = Registered Nurse
ICU = Intensive Care Unit
ER = Emergency Room
CCRN = Critical Care Registered Nurse
CFRN= Certified Flight RN
CEN = Certified Emergency Nurse

Darn you mikie

Get used to abbreviations... they are the lingo of EMS and you won't get anywhere without understanding them.

yeah I knew EMT, EMS and ER (well duh, everyone does) but it's just the others that confused me. I know stuff like BLS/ALS and MICU, NPA, OPA, BVM... you know, the basic stuff. But I don't have a clue about the high-tech talk. Oh well, maybe that could be in part to the fact that I'm only Red Cross certified as a lay rescuer. My aunt's an ER nurse so maybe she could help me out some.

Its a climb and takes time to get there but well worth all the effort in my opinion. Don't rush it. Rid gave ya some good advice on steps to get there. A good foundational educational will make learning and applying the clinical part much easier.

Enroll in an EMT program and get your certification and then a Community College or other accredited institution that has a Paramedic Program.
