how long does all the process from start of the filling out the application to being hired. for example how long is the transcare hiring process and fdny.

For a private; if your timing is right 2 weeks.

For a gov agency; a couple months at the minimum (backgrounds and multiple phases)

Private agencies, days if you are applying at the right time.

FDNY... oof.

As a paramedic, 6-12 months.

As an EMT, 1-2 years. (My friend just got hired, waited 2 years)

I was debating if I should go to paramedic school because there is no jobs or there is long wait fdny is not hiring until September and Private I just applied three weeks ago no answer

I'm going on 7 months now for my volunteer department:huh: I guess it depends on where you go.

Your volly dept must be flush with members.
In my neck of the woods you're cleared as soon as your BCI checks out.

^^ they told me it would be long process .. I'm ok with it as its a great city to work for.

I have given many people this advice so far and not one has taken it.

GET YOUR PARAMEDIC ASAP.

If your goal is to work for FDNY, you will be hired as a medic faster than EMT.

You can complete your paramedic and get hired, before you get hired as an EMT and you can still apply as an EMT to cover all bases.

Not to mention by taking your paramedic on the outside now, while you are arguably doing nothing, it will save/gain you around $30,000-50,000 depending on how you look at it.

there is still no jobs for als i checked indeed. if i become paramedic it will be great but still no experience

To repeat what I've read a thousand times before:

Get your medic and be prepared to relocate to where the work is.

In NYC/LI there are PLENTY of jobs for paramedics.

Especially with FDNY. We are always hiring and they want medics more than EMTs.

You are looking in the wrong places. I can find a job tomorrow if I needed to.

Also keep in mind as a medic you can still work as an EMT if for some reason you can't find work...

Anyone who plans to stay in EMS more than a couple years, as their primary "career," is absolutely insane for not taking a medic program. (I realize some people have life constraints but otherwise, insane.)

This.

You could always check around clinics and hospitals as well. It's not as 'glamorous' as being on the rig, but you'll still learn skills and patient communication. Especially in an ER, which would expose you to a lot of situations you would otherwise not see.

I plan on taking your advice you gave me, after I get my emt-b this summer I will look for medic courses first and then look for job after to be able to work around the medic training. I'm getting my emt with north shore LIJ and possibly my emt-p with them also, although it costs 10 grand with north shore

I have seen online a decent amount of hospitals hiring emtb, medics,er techs. Most of them are in the city and I was surprised to see some of the salaries for just emt basics making 40k for some hospitals and medics averaging around 70. After I get all my certs though I will apply for fdny right away which can open many doors.

Curious: If I'm expecting to be in EMS as a volley for as long as I can, and want to pick up a second job on the side, like some per-diem stuff, would it be worthwhile to get my AEMT or medic?

If they hire AEMT sure.

Around here no one actually hires AEMT except for like 2 places and they still rarely hire them over medics.

AEMT on Long Island mostly exists as a shortcut to get volunteers who won't take a paramedic class to do ALS things.

Makes sense. I wouldn't hire an AEMT-CC if I could hire a medic. I've looked at the AEMT-CC curriculum, and it doesn't seem to have nearly as much basic medical science coverage as the medic coursework.

Next to none.

Paramedic is far below the educational standard it needs, CC is just adding massive insult to injury.

I could literally find you a paramedic job in 60 second phone call, so your just not looking hard enough or checking in the right places.

Maybe what you meant is that there are not and "cool" ALS jobs, like in some progressive or something with a cool name like FDNY or Miami-Dade or something that pays 100k out the gate. But I know there are ALS projects in NJ and DE that are hiring right now. One has a 5k signing bonus another will chip in for your relocation costs if you qualify

curious

How long does it usually take a paramedic to be hired onto a major metro/city center with a hospital? like Denver CO, or Sandiego CA?
