Hi, I have slight hearing impairment. I have a hard time getting accurate BPs. I have a regular Littman stethoscope that my grandparents gave me and I really like it but in the back of a moving ambulance I still have hard time hearing. I looked online and found Ultra scope. They look dorky but they are supposed to be good for hearing impaired. Anyone know anything about them? Are they really that great? They were reasonably priced about $100.00 please let me know. thankyou!

I don't know about that specific stethoscope, but it seems most new people have a hard time hearing BP's in the truck. I've got a nice Littman, but I've found that I hear better with the cheap heavy $15 stethoscopes.

Aside from that, I had to pass a hearing test as part of my pre-employment health screen. Have you already found a job?

Yes, I have a job and have been employed for awhile. I can hear BPs it is just difficult sometimes so I was looking for something that would help me do my job better.

I got a Littmann Cardiology III as a present. I was doing fine with a crappy one and never considered buying a Littmann at that price. However, after I have it and have used it, I now swear by it and would happily pay the price to buy it again. I find that the acoustics are much better. In fact, when taking manual BPs, I often find that I get lower diastolics since I can hear a lower register. Morale of the story is that buying a good steth might help.

It shouldn't be a problem for employment since employers have to make reasonable accommodations per the ADA. I have a friend who is hearing impaired and they bought him an electronic one that amplifies and he can function just as well as the rest of us. You described your impairment as "slight" and while "slight" isn't really a quantitative comparison, my friend would probably classify his as moderate to severe (he uses hearing aids) so you should be ok.

Interesting! On a side note, can a person who is blind in one eye work in the field? I injured my eye a couple of weeks ago, and luckily my vision came back the next day, but at the time my career was flashing before my eyes.

Agreed. I don't let people use it very often but when I do they always make comments about it.

I'm not sure about being blind since it may preclude you from driving, some places that might not be an issue though. I feel like I've seen some job postings have vision parameters but I might be thinking of fire jobs.

We have a medic hear who's nearly deaf. She wears bilateral hearing aids and does just fine. She does say that she has a difficult time hearing some patients. I'm not sure what kind of stethoscope she uses. To give some perspective to it, she listens to metal music because "I can feel it". That's how bad her hearing is. Now, with that said a lot of music can be felt but I do see where she's coming from.
