Hi all, well I got my first emt job with a private company. Yay :) But as the start date gets closer, Sept. 25, the more nervous I get. All my EMS friends just tell me I'm going to lose all confidence in myself before I start feeling like I know what I'm doing. So I'm just wondering what should I really expect my first couple of days other then feeling like a deer in the headlights. They have me on a day car for the first few shifts with another EMT, then I start 24 hour shifts. Thanks for all the answers!

Is it IFT or a 911 job. IFT, you'll feel overwhelmed for a few days maybe, then you'll have a log of confidence in yourself and feel perfectly fine running calls and doing the runs. 911 you'll be overwhelmed for a few weeks and it will be a little while before you know how the full show goes every time. That being said, don't let that feeling get you down and don't let it stop you. Ask lots of questions your first few days as that is what the training shifts are for and before you know it, you'll feel like one of the team!

The day car is just IFTs, and the 24 hour shifts are 911 calls. Thanks for answering. I'm really not looking forward to making a fool of myself. Lol

You will. I am still in my FTO for my first EMS job and it is 911. Every call you learn something new, and every call you have something else that goes into autopilot that you needed to remember to do last time, like lower the stretcher. I posted a thread a week or so ago when I was having issues, and just keep on running calls helps alot, as well as the advice in this thread:

Thanks ghost that thread helped. I'm just glad for the first 3 shifts they have me transports to get my toes wet. I'm scared to about just going blank and freezing. I know today I'll be definitly studying my old classroom handouts and all.

ask questions and do not worry about sounding dumb.. Over time you will become more comfortable and will learn a lot of stuff.

I learn new things every day and I've been in EMS for 3 years. Still getting my feet wet.
