Firefighters accused of prank 911 calls

BALLSTON SPA -- Three volunteer firefighters from Eagle-Matt Lee company accused of making prank 911 calls in the early morning of Oct. 16 are suspended pending an investigation, Mayor John Romano said Monday night.

The joke backfired when the calls rolled over to the county dispatcher.

The men, who were allegedly drinking, are accused of taking a patrol car after a police officer came to the firehouse on Washington Street to see what was going on.

'It can't be taken lightly,' Romano said. 'It's very, very serious.'

Romano, the village Board of Trustees and the village attorney met for more than an hour in executive session following Monday night's regular meeting.

It was close to 9:30 p.m. when Romano and village attorney Rich Kupferman left Village Hall. Romano said he wanted to inform the board of the situation, which he first learned of last week.

Police Chief Charles Koenig did not attend the session.

'There's been charges and accusations leveled against three members of the fire department,' Romano said. 'They've been suspended pending a review.

'If, at the end of the investigation, there was inappropriate conduct, they'll be held accountable.
