We had a 12 year old boy hang himself with his shoestrings over the weekend. Although the call was in another town, it was a student I work with during my day job at school. The student was in a classroom for students with emotional issues but was such a sweet kid. How do you go about explaining suicide to kids 5-13 when some of them may be thinking of doing the same thing? Any suggestions? In the meantime, please say a prayer for this child if you would. Thank you!

I'm not sure what your day job is at the school, but is this really your job?

This is something that needs to be handled by someone like a school counselor.

If you do not know how to explain this or is asking for advice on an anonymous forum, you may not be the right person for this very delicate and emotional subject. I would suggest you take specialized classes in counseling children before attempting this. In the meantime, your county's health or education offices should have someone on staff that can provide some level of professional expertise in the situation. The fact that they may not have direct knowledge of the child may also be of some benefit. While it is sometimes good to show emotions, it can also distract from the message itself.

Like they said.

Also, I know this can bring up tough feelings in the care providers/EMS and LE who respond, not to mention everyone involved and sometimes folks just reading about it. You wouldn't try to treat a fracture by yourself, if this is seriously on your mind seek the counsel of folks you know and trust, maybe a professional counselor, and if the company offers a group session for those who went through it, by all means participate.

I'm sorry you and your cohorts had to go through that.

I'm gonna say go with professionals here. This is a very touchy issue that, if you're not trained properly, than shouldn't be delt with by you. I would approach a person who is unresponsive on the street and start CPR because they no longer had a pulse. But I wouldn't run into a building fully engulfed in flames. Why? Because I'm not trained to do that.

Prayers are being sent..........-_-
