EMT career

Hey Everyone.
So im currently working on an ambulance as an EMT and have been for about 2 months but i feel like im losing my skills because 80% of transports are either discharge or dialysis. I was wondering if there are any books that help me refine my EMT skills or just allow me to become a better EMT.
Also i wanted to get some feedback on whether or not i should stay on BLS for a longer period of time before i go into medic school. Im only 19 right now and i wanted to take some classes on medical terminology and anatomy before i go into medic school so im better prepared. Help me make some decisions. THank you.

Any medical book you find, pretty much. Not many 'skills' to refine at the EMT level. Just get good at assessment, no reason not to be. If you're working IFT, you have plenty of patients to be assessing who actually ARE somewhat sick.

Get hands on.

Only you can answer the question of "Am I ready?" Not people on an internet forum. I started medic school at 20 with minimal experience, I did fine. Many Paramedics here also had little to no experience, yet did great.

Don't let anyone tell you you NEED experience before going on. Go on when you feel you're ready yourself.

I agree with everything Linuss just said. At the basic level there aren't a lot of skills that you need to be able to refine, but you must be good at assessing patients. Assessment is a key role in becoming a good EMT and a good paramedic, without a good assessment you have nothing to base your treatment off of, thereby making any skills you've refined, useless.

You'll know when you're ready for medic school, we won't. There are a multitude of different ways you can approach medic school. Make sure you take some A&P classes, chemistry, medical terminology, and other core classes, then once you feel you're ready, go for it. Like Linuss said, there are plenty of people on here who went straight into medic school with little to no experience (me being one of them) and did great. It's all about the person, and when it comes down to it, you'll be the only one that can really decide when you're ready for medic school.
