Hello everyone I am hoping to start a Emt-b Class at Mt.Sac C.C in the spring.I was hoping that some people may have taken the class already and can help me wih what I will be taught and what I can expect so I have a little better Idea of whats going to happen. Also is there anything anyone thinks would be helpful to get a idea about before starting classes?

Also had a question about once you get a job what are the duties and responsiblities of the Emt-B newbie-veteran I would imagine every place is different but in general I am trying to get a idea of what happens what to expect what is a NO-NO what is overall expected of somone just out of school. Also about shceduling is it 9-5( I hope not) or is it flexable I know as a new hire of course I would take what I could get and be greatful but again know every place is probadly different how does the shifts work..

Thanks for any help or advice....Gary

To be very general, it will be a huge learning experince. There is a tremendous amount of information to cover.

Since you are entering the CC EMT program, I take it that you have already, or are currently completing the 3 unit First Reponder prereq class.
This will be of great value as it gives you the foundation to build on.

In the EMT program, you will greatly expand on anatomy and pathophysiology, as well as differential diagnosis and treatment of a variety of EMS related disease states. You will also become far more familar with your skills set taught in the first reponder course.

In addition, your EMT lab will include limited clinicals in the ER and field internship on the ambulance.

Best advice is to stay on top of the subject matter. Read the required chapters before class or you will be lost during lecture and wasting you, and your instructors time.

Good luck, it's a very fast moving program but you will learn so much.

Whoa whoa say what?

The duties of an EMT you will learn in the class. Since your in SoCal it's pretty much gonna be driving and helping the medic do whatever he wants. In Riverside County the 911 contract is done by AMR (with Fire doing a couple cities). AMR's shifts are mostly 12 hour shifts with some 24 hour shifts available.

Once you get hired you will go thru Field Training (at least with AMR) once you are done with your Training time then you have all the responsibility of an EMT who has been working for 10+ years.

Again for AMR shifts are done on a bid system (the longer you have worked for the company the more points you get to bid with). So starting out you will get some not so liked shifts.
