EMT Affiliation

This may sound like a "duh" question to some of you guys, but I am wondering exactly what an EMT affiliation is. I will begin taking the EMT-Basic course this summer, and one of the requirements is having an affiliation with such places as the fire dept, or police dept. Would I be able to just call any of these places around and they'll say "yes"? Or is there something else I must do?

You dont list where you are from. I know in New York and New Jeresy, one can receive free EMT-B training with "sponsorship" from a fire or EMS department, courtesy of the state OEMS.
Otherwise, I dont think any other state looks for affiliation for training. You should find a course or academy that is ideally accredited, and ask about who the instructor is, the time frame for the class, etc.
