So according to the Today Show, yesterday I think, studies have shown that Diet Sodas cause strokes. I know that this isn't a scientific forum and whatnot, but I was wondering if anyone had anything to say on how that's true, or their opinions on that statement.

Maybe I don't know enough about strokes, but I can't currently see how soda can cause a stroke. Also, if it's true, wouldn't younger people have more strokes?

We know that certain diet sodas can increase your risks for stroke, though we don't understand why. However, for me to believe that it DIRECTLY causes strokes,
I'd have to see several peer-reviewed studies.

i believe that it is the type of person who drinks diet soda most likely does/has other things which may also increase the propensity of a stroke. I do not buy that diet soda increases your chance of stroke. but i could be totally wrong.

The original study was performed by "Hannah Gardener". I am having a hard time finding it, and I refuse to use sources like ABC News and Yahoo as references, so I will refrain from posting until such time as I find the original study and not hear-say of what it says.

A lot of docs think that this is an accidental correlation, the study is apparently far from comprehensive although this individual has published in AHA literature before.

I totally see that. When I studied psychology we went over the fact that correlation does NOT mean cause. Because people tend to see them being the same thing a lot. The same COULD be said about the vaccinations causing an increase in Autism.

I think that after more people research it, it's going to be a little different then they've originally studied it.

I also ask because I happen to be drinking a lot of Diet Coke lately. Not that I'm worried, but it would be nice to know.

I heard a speech once about how one of the metabolites of (I'm assuming aspartame) is formaldehyde. I do not give much credibility to the speaker, and she cited no resources. Can anyone speak to this? Is that like a duh thing? Rob, paging Rob. I'd like to hear about the metabolism of apartame.

I know for me, I had a little diet pepsi problem, quit it cold turkey and shook for 3 days, with headache, nausea, and general crabbiness (my husband would say, what else is new?). I drank ONE 12 oz diet pepsi 6 weeks later and my chest hurt all day.

I have a regular intake of caffeine through other drugs (caramel macchiato)...what could have caused that?

The obvious answer...
They cause strokes because whomever did the study wanted to prove it. Medical studies are some of the most hideously biased and poorly structured reports ever written. Hey, if I wanted to prove that being born on a Tuesday increased your odds of dying young I could. I'd just need the 6 or 60 patients (I hand select) that prove my point, and an M.D. title to prevent people from questioning my results. Oops! forgot I also need someone to throw obscene amounts of $$$ at my study.

Yeah I could see the studies. Here wash this diet coke down for 10 years and get back to us if you have stroke. Who knows how they are going to be able to determine the diet coke caused it.

Do you mean to say that some medical studies are untrue? Geez and here I thought the whole time childhood vaccines increased the odds of becoming autistic!

Brown is going to bite Browns tongue .... ow Browns tongue!

From what I've heard on this, and my lay person interpretation, which is to say I read an article and am agreeing with it, a single study made this conclusion, that drinking diet soda increases the likelihood of stroke, and that this has yet to be replicated in further studies. Think it was a Forbes article.

So, if you weigh 300#, have an average BP of 160/110, and don't drink diet soda, basically this will tell the person, oh, don't change a thing, it's healthier this way, if you follow the media line that diet soda causes stroke.

Brown I hope you picked up on atleast a little of my sarcasm :P haha

Yeah. Recently heard another radio nutritionist

...saying that "studies proved soybean products cause male impotence". That must explain why China has had such a low birthrate all these centuries.
Death to media nutritionists!
