Hi I'm an EMR from Alberta and will be training as an EMT-A. I see a lot of different qualifications for different states. How does the training differ in the U.S. from Canada. Here an EMT diploma is 10 months and a Paramedic is two years. Average wage for an EMT is about $23/hr (as per job listings). How does this compare and does each state have its own scope of practice and level of EMS? Just wondering because a lot of the acronyms are confusing. Thanks.

I thought ACoP dropped the A from EMT-A making it now EMT. Alberta and maybe one or two other provinces still use EMT whereas the rest use PCP (Primary Care Paramedic) Which is roughly equivalent to an EMT-I. IN Ontario PCP is 2 yrs minimum with ACP being 6 to 10 months (which is the reverse of how Alberta does it). In Alberata depending where you take your EMT/PCP training its anywhere from 6 to 10 months.

SAIT still lists it as EMT-A probably in order to differentiate it from EMT-P. I think ACP does list is as EMT. I'm surprised no one from the U.S. forum would give me any insight.

Sorry I didn't see the rest of your post. So in Alberta lingo-it would take 2 years to be an EMT and then 1 more year to be a Paramedic?

The EMT/PCP course I am strongly considering is at the University of Toronto at Scarborough for the Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine. Then after that I'm hoping to go to University of Manitoba for their Physician Assistants program. Then after that back to the NWT where I hope to work in the Diamond mines at the mine medical dept which is staffed by PA's and sometimes NP's.

So once you have received a B.Sc. (is that 4 year?) and then your Physician's Assistant-what type of work would you do-hospital or ambulance? Does Ontario not offer any of this at a college level? What would this be comparable to in Alberta?

Yes that is 4 year. I'm hoping outpost work in one of the diamond mines we have here in the NWT.

Does that increase your scope of practice over a Paramedic or is it basically the same as theirs?

Pa's can wite prescriptions and order lab tests but like the rest of EMS they can't do squat without having an MD's licence to work under.

That sounds like a very ambitious enterprise but really exciting. Hope that all works out and thanks so much for helping to clear up my confusion:)
