I'm getting into education and so my responsibilities at work have begun to shift a bit into that capacity. That includes training new hires in the field. As of right now at my IFT company where I work full time we have no standardized training program. There's a check off sheet with information on it that we are supposed to fill out and then write some comments on the back of if we feel like it. Orientation last about 3 or 4 days sometimes as little as 2 days depending on who is teaching the class. After three rides you are expected to be able to work on your own.

There are no permanent field training officers and no consistency in who new people ride with. There has been some talk lately about developing a standardized course and creating a permanent FTO corps for consistency but there has been no movement on that front from the powers that be.

I have started doing some research into training programs and trying to develop a program on my own and presenting it to my company. I feel as if we will better prepare our new emt's and medics for what they might encounter and what's expected of them.

My 911 job has a 5 third ride minimum with 15 rides 2nd with an FTO. The trainees are tracked each day and each call they run is individually graded for performance. A binder is left in the office for the FTO's to be able to track the progress of the person they are training that day and copies of the evaluations are given to the education department so they can track progress and remediate skills as needed during the training process. I doubt that they would allow us the luxury of having 5 third rides minimum but by placing new hires with an FTO for a minimum number of shifts it seems as if we could make better progress with our hires.

Has anyone developed a training program for their service? How did it go and what criteria did you use? Are there any resources available online for development?

Thanks in advance!

TL;DR Creating a FTO program; any tips?
