Hey,

I'm an EMT in training and was looking to buy my first stethoscope. I'm not sure of the differences between all of the following types:

Single-Head & Single tube
Dual-head & Dual tube (Sprague-Rapport type)
Dual-Head & Single tube
Multfunction head

I found a nicely priced one on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Omron-Sprague...RLKI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337700701&sr=8-1

Any thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

I find dual tubes suck. You get a lot of tubes making sounds that aren't there.

I can't :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: my ultrascope out enough. Seriously. Best scope I've ever used and I have used littmann, kila and adc plus regular sprauges.

I got a Reister last week and I am finding it to be equal the littmann I used for a decade.

Like any skill, it is determined more by the user than the equipment.

I would equate it as: Even if you buy a customized Trek bicycle, you are still not going to win the Tour De France.

Learn to be good at your skills first, then worry about your equipment.

I like it.

Sasha,

I feel like starting out as a EMT-B and having the Ferrari of stethoscope is odd. I plan on moving on to either PA or med school which is where I'd like that status symbol.

It is far from the ferari. It's more like the camry of scopes.

Well priced and functions nicely with a good warranty.

You must learn the art of regifting stethoscopes.

As for later and moving on.

A great doctor can use any scope.

A great scope in the hands of somebody who can't use one makes that person look like a moron.

I want to order one of those old style "listening horns" to carry around with me.

They are still used for fetal heart tones. (they are the best for it too)

How bad do you want one? They are rather cheap here.

I'm a big guy and I find that slightly longer tubing works to my advantage. I use a Prestige "vet style" scope. Same as a regular stethoscope, just a longer tube. Best 40 bucks I ever spent.

Unless you lose it a stethoscope should last for a while. If you're moving on from EMS odds are you'll still have your scope, so look at it as an investment if you will. I have a midrange Littmann that people at work occasionally give me crap for but I will a) have a scope for post-secondary schooling and b) not have ever gotten an ear infection while working.
