Hello all. Well to sum it up I'm a nursing major that just isnt quite sure wether i want nursing after all. Im 23 and considering going pre-med. Nevertheless I have always been very interested in EMT for quite some time. I understand being an emt isnt as glamourous as the tv shows, however I still am interested in getting my feet wet with EMT-b and seeing how I like the profession it seems like a great idea.

The question that has been plagueing my mind is; Is emt-b a good choice while still attending school?... I currently work as a unit clerk in the OR (not happy with this job) at the local hospital and working at earning a BS in nursing and or pre-med classes for anesthesiology.

That is a personal choice if you can handle it with your current load. You should know what you are able to handle.

A word of advice it is easy to pass with a little study, but to learn the info and be the best you can be and give the best possible care, should be your number on priority if not reconsider why you are getting invovled, you need to put the time in and learn it.

Not to be rude, but you need to make up your mind. The three occupations you described are totally separate professions that really have nothing in common.

Pre-Med and BSN are totally different subjects and studies. If you do not want to be a nurse, then don't go to nursing school. If you are considering nursing to be a nurse, and want to specialize, why not be a nurse anesthetist? As well, one still has to be a RN first, then graduate school afterwards (3 years afterwards). Similar, one has to go through medical school become a physician then apply for anesthesiology residency (4-5 years).

EMT is nothing or has nothing similar to any of those professions above. Why take a course that will not prepare or introduce you to anything similar to your goals?

Many assume one can work as an EMT while going to school. I much rather recommend working in a laboratory, ER, etc. than in the field. The work schedule for most EMT's is not steady nor helpful for those in school, as well pay is far below in comparison to other jobs.

I would highly recommend you to speak to your counselor and focus on your studies, dependent on what you really want to do or become.

It is nice to have goals, but in regards to those professions one needs to really narrow the focus for studies, education and costs.

I wish you good luck...

Lol, then you have the weirdo's like me who are doing both B.S.N. and Pre-Med at the same time(NOT SOMETHING I RECOMMEND). I have decided that I want to experience multiple aspects of medicine. I wanted EMT-P; then RN, B.S.N. then RN, M.S.N. A.C.N.P./F.N.P.(Vandy's Emergency Nurse Prac program), then--given the appropriate MCAT scores along with my Ugrad B.S.; I want to attend medical school; to focus on Neuro Critical Care as an M.D.

I see it as a well-rounded approach. I wouldnt have it any other way, but then again--I am crazy.

Rid, you are correct about not being able to work many EMT shifts whilst pursuing full-time(> 12 hrs) college coursework.
I cut alot of my EMS shifts to go over to the medical center for a position as Lab Assistant II(Phlebotomist) and the IV Therapy team.
These departments work my schedule around my classes and clinicals(which sometimes go until 2 am).
