Hi there!

I am entering the last few weeks of my training at Peoria Area EMS here in Peoria, IL. I've been working in medicine for the last 10 years as a vet assistant, medical assistant, chiropractic assistant...pretty much anything and everything I could lay my hands on to learn as much as I could. My current job finds me as a Medical Assistant (non CMA- I feel like that's a joke) at a pediatric allergy and pulmonology office. So far I've been excelling at my training and I think I've finally found something that actually clicks with me.

My original plan was to remain in Peoria for another year or so, working with the local company, and getting some experience to back up the book learning- then going on to work towards my Medic license. However the best laid plans of mice and men, right?

My fiancee works in Insurance and recently decided that the best thing for our future is to relocate to a larger city where he can progress (Peoria is pretty stagnant unless you work for Caterpillar or go to Nursing school) and low and behold- he's started getting call backs for Chicago. I'm thrilled to be moving with him and excited to move forward- but we may have to leave any minute.

So I guess my conundrum is thus- It may be that we have to move before I even pass my board, and will almost surely have to get out of town before I have any real on the street time.

I'm worried about finding a position in Chicago that will take me without any prior experience. I know I could easily find another Med Assistant or Tech position, but would rather not settle for moving backwards. I took this course for a reason, and want to do what I've prepared for.

If anyone can tell me some things I may be able to do to look more attractive despite my super greenhorn nature, I'd be appreciative. My instructors have suggested I take all of the "alphabet soup" courses here in Peoria before I go, and I have a really good relationship with them and would like to do so. But what else? I'm totally lost, and more than a little concerned.

I know there are a lot of very seasoned Paramedics here, so I hope some of you might take pity on a little noob and share your wisdom.

Thanks!

Ive always liked this approach and it worked for me several years ago in the panel interview for my current position,

"I understand that Experience is not something I have on my side, but im a brand new book with a few blank pages,im free of bad habits, ready to be molded into the Paramedic your department needs."

Blank Pages

That's actually pretty great. I will have to remember that. I'm always great at speeches in my head, but never seem to get them out. :)
