The firefighters were responding to a fully involved SUV when they were hit by another vehicle; one in critical condition
KMPH
FRESNO, Calif. — Two Tulare County firefighters are at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno Saturday evening.
One is in critical condition in the critical care unit, the other is standing by his injured friend's bedside.
Engineer Pat Hines — a 56–year–old volunteer firefighter — and 52–year–old fire captain, Gary Gregory, were responding to a vehicle fire just north of Avenue 54 and Road 16, near Alpaugh.
"Engine 9 out of Alpaugh went out, they found a fully involved SUV, as they were attempting to extinguish the fire, a car practically came out of nowhere," said Joe Garcia with the Tulare County Fire Department.
Hines was thrown about 50 feet on impact.
He was airlifted to CRMC with two broken legs, broken ribs, and internal injuries.
His status was downgraded from serious to critical Saturday evening.
Captain Gregory was treated for minor injuries at Tulare District Hospital.
"As he fell to the side, he managed to see a white pickup, possibly a Ford pickup driving away at a high rate of speed," said Garcia.
It turns out the vehicle on fire was stolen out of Avenal, a common occurrence in Tulare County.
"People stealing cars and burning them, that's a trend today. We get 5–6 a week, many more on the weekends, Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning," said Garcia.
Authorities believe the subjects in the white pickup truck may have been responsible for setting the vehicle on fire, but investigators have few leads so far.
"This is a tragic incident, but there are a lot of unanswered questions. Lack of witnesses, lack of evidence, we're just hoping for the best," said Garcia.
Authorities are looking for the suspects in a white pickup truck, possibly a Ford, with major front end damage.
If you have any information, you're asked to call the Tulare County fire department, or the Tulare County sheriff's department.
