Dumbest thing heard on the radio

"Dispatch, this is Smalltown xxx, can you get fire dispatched to our location as well, please? There is a dead deer on the road." "10-4 Smalltown xxx, fire has been dispatched. Just need to confirm; is the deer obstructing traffic? And is there any debris on the road?" "10-4 to both...

You know you are an EMT/Paramedic when...

This is silly. I knew I was an EMT when I passed the provincial exams and started working. However, my FAMILY notices (and laughs about) the fact that I am an EMT when I: -Say "10-4" after being given my total at a drive through -Accidentally write "EMT" after my signature half the...

Funny Things We Say To Make Our Patients Feel Better

Ghost of Patient's Past "We are going to be transporting using lights and sirens today, so if you hear a sudden, ear piercing wail as we are driving, please don't freak and make a break for it ... it's not the Ghost of Patients Past ... just my partner exercising his right to make noise...

    Ambulance vs Snowplow - YIKES!

Too fast for conditions? Yup, it was a pretty bad one, alright! Got a good foot of snow at least, in that dump. The only weird thing is that if you look at the news photos, there's hardly anything on the ground... Not that it makes much difference. You can't see worth heck driving behind...

you know you're in EMS when... someone asks you if you are a morning person or a night person and you just stare at them blankly

    funny joke

A body builder in a ferrari accidentally rear-ends a dwarf who is driving a smart car. The dwarf, who is understandably upset, marches over to the ferrari in a rage and bangs on the driver's window. "I am NOT happy!" he screams up at the body builder as the window rolls down. The body...

    Alberta EMR Protocol

*SLAP* No, I'm kidding! I honestly am not sure either. But it must be something to that effect. All I know about is online and offline protocols. Offline being standing orders, and online being where you phone medical control and go "uhhh... " From what I remember *looks over ancient EMR...

    Alberta EMR Protocol

Okay, so you have done your primary head to toe, and identified a problem. You are in the back of the unit, en route, and your order now is going to go: 1) history, 2) vitals (I usually do vitals first, then history, but whatever floats your boat.) 3) med. assist/interventions 4)...

    12 lead help?

Aahhh, systemet, why could you not have been one of my instructors???? Thanks for the great reply! This makes so much more sense when it is explained like that. (P.S. loved the guillotine...)

    12 lead help?

Thanks a lot, guys! I will check those out. Truth to tell, a book on 12 leads has got to be one of the few things that I honestly don't care if it is "hand-holding" or repetitive. The more dumbed down the better, as far as I am concerned. 12 leads are just one of those things that you need...

    12 lead help?

Hey, does anybody know of any good websites/textbooks that really explain 12 leads well? I've tried searching online and come up with nothing all that helpful. They were covered in our EMT training (how to put them on, basic patterns, red flags, etc.) but interpretation was not covered very in...

    Arrest Save: A Nice Story

    Alberta EMR Protocol

Hey, good luck on your exam! When do you write ACP? Good questions! Here's my best shot... 1)In an ACP EMR scenario, you pretty much without exception do your primary on scene, then state that pt. is a load-n-go, package, and do the rest of your scenario "in the back of the ambulance"...

    EMT-B course, what to expect?

Yeah, read up in your books and everything, but I would really suggest trying to get in a few ride alongs with a local service before your course starts. All that A&P and assessment stuff is going to make a lot more sense after you have gone on a couple calls, and seen it work in real life...

Football players sue over head injuries!

Well said, Lady_EMT! It's not really a fault that you can pinpoint on anyone. It's unfortunate that it happened, but now that it has, the NFL needs to address the issue, and move on. A lawsuit is not going to do anything to solve the problem.

Football players sue over head injuries!

Seriously?! Isn’t that kind of like me suing my EMS service for emotional abuse and sleep deprivation??? ...(which DEFINITELY causes me to walk around “in a daze” and not remember why I entered a room...)

How much did becoming an EMT/medic cost you?

"I'm not saying the AB system is bad. I actually think it's quite good. But the length of training basically hasn't been increased in 20 years, and the scope of practice, and general responsibilities have. I think if AB is to continue moving forwards, it needs to address some fundamental...
