How do you know if someone is a volunteer EMT?

I don't bother with a radar detector because if by chance I end up speeding without one, I may get off with a warning. With many of the local officers, if they pull you over and they see a radar detector, they WILL give you a ticket since you had already purchased your warning.

Ooh. Nice! So what sort of rescue was it? Adoption? Get a dog out of an unsafe situation? Do mouth-to-snout (or use a pet oxygen mask) at a fire? Depending on what hat I'm wearing at the time, each of those could be considered a rescue.

When to wear your fireman suit

I'm not fire-trained, but what equipment I bring with me depends on what dispatch said the problem was. The helmet stays home unless the call sounds like a fire or a MVA. The reflective vest and/or jacket stays home unless its a fire, night time, inclement weather, or cold enough for a jacket...

    Pt sitting on the bench

My patients all ride in on the stretcher. The only time we didn't take the stretcher into the ER with the patient was a patient with a bad laceration on her hand from a kitchen accident. When we called in the report the ER said to take her to triage in a wheelchair. She couldn't drive herself...

    Ever "Google" Treatment?

The only time I've used google on a run was to check the spelling of medications when writing up my report. If the patient shows me bottles, I'll copy the name down, but if they rattle off a list of medications because they don't have the bottles with them, I often need to look up how to spell them.

I need to find a new way to describe how I come up with some of my knitting projects. Apparently I'm no longer allowed to use the phrase "Off the top of my head" to describe how I came up with my hats.

And now the waiting game begins. Had an interview today to see about getting into a tuition free CNA program. I won't find out until the 8th if I made the cut. I hope I did because the job market isn't great for any of the fields I've gone to school for.

I'm in Maine, and I think we're allowed to divert to a funeral home. I'll check with the chiefs next time I see them.

Hrm... if its a cleaning OCD, that may turn out to be an advantage when cleaning the rig after a call. ;) And I'm intending that to be light-hearted. I know several EMTs with various mental health issues. I've had random panic attacks for most of my life, but what I've found is that they've...

We're not a private company. One department I'm on is municipal, and the other is a non-profit all volunteer department. State law says no CPR in a moving vehicle, so we really don't have much of a choice there. Of course if we're within sight of the hospital we might continue, but otherwise...

911 providers: Does your agency charge people for having you come over?

I'm a volunteer on two departments. One is a municipal department, and the other is an all volunteer, non-profit department. Neither one charges unless we transport.

Far too hot to cook. Dinner tonight is tabbouleh salad with multi-grain pita chips, and plenty of iced-tea.

I'd suggest signing up with your local fire/rescue for some ride-alongs if you're unsure. Tell them you've taken the course but not licensed, and that you'd like to try it out to see if its suitable for you. In my area, they'll take all skill levels, and help you train up if you want to go further.

In my area, if there's no pulse, there's no transport. If a patient becomes pulse-less en route, we're supposed to pull over and try to get a pulse back if possible before continuing.

Unless you're my dad who got sick of people changing the radio station in his truck. He set all the buttons to the same station, then broke the tuning knob.

I don't think I could bring myself to try frog. I used to have a pet frog many years ago. Also, when I was in college I used to work behind a seafood counter that sold frog legs. I used to have a recipe to hand out to customers called "Frog Leg Stew With a Kick" That usually got a groan out of them.

New. And need some questions answered!

I found it difficult to write on my glove on scene without smearing it. One of the departments I'm on took the 'field notebook' and enlarged it on the copier until it was a full-size page. There is a large stack of those pages in a clip-board and we use that for taking notes. It also leaves...

    day bag/pack?

I have an old backpack I got from a previous job because I donated a certain amount to a certain charity. I take it with me to work in case I don't go home for the night. Sometimes I'll crash at a relative's if I'm not feeling up to the hour-long drive home. Its basically a small zippered...

    BLS EKG Interpretation

If an EMT has the curiosity to learn to interpret an EKG, I say more power to them. Sure they can't diagnose a rhythm at that license level, but they can turn to the paramedic, pretend they're on Jeopardy and answer in the form of a question. Assuming of course they have a paramedic with...
