For all the anti-union people who trust the management......

First, the pool of desperate people willing to work (I assume you mean illegal immigrants) generally find jobs because unions think its right for them to DECIDE the wage rate for their work. In other words, a union will set an arbitrary salary for someone fixing nuts into a assembly line, a low...

Will a fire department hire a pre-med student?

I can give a little input here, as a paramedic that worked part time at a fire department during the time I was in college and now find myself in medical school. In general, you will not be able to get on as a "firefighter" if that's what you want. As was mentioned before, the fire departments...

Detroit EMS hits a new low

It's sad that the unions don't realize that they are part of the problem. There's a reason that Detroit is under such a massive budget deficit.

    My Sad Story

It might be a blessing in disguise, as a basic, you get very little true clinical experience with the level of training. Although many EMTs are skilled in "skills," few have a good understanding of medical conditions. The ER is a great place to learn a lot if you are proactive and are eager to...

    Exhausted 2010 Edition.

I'm assuming you're taking the EMT-B course? It must be hard, especially with kids. The short answer is that you don't try to juggle more than work, school, and kids. In other words, eat right (a big trap for those starting EMS is to live on junk) and don't worry about your social life for now...

    The Chronic Public Inebriate

I'm glad you were able to kick the habit Jeffrey, it must have taken a lot of discipline on your part. I'm considering the "drunks" I have dealt with in EMS. These aren't the people that are successful in rehab. There's a reason that rehab/detox/AA programs have ridiculously high rates of...

    College and Paramedic Courses

I can speak on this because I did something similar. The only thing was my paramedic course was very accommodating to a college schedule. Our classes were 2 days a week in the evenings and I pulled most of my clinicals during the weekend (although some ER hours can be fit in after class on some...

    The Chronic Public Inebriate

Interesting...so they can either sleep it off in the ER or sleep it off in a drug abuse facility?

EKG Strip: Progression of ST Elevation

Just a quick question for the older medics, in your experience how prominent do Q-waves (with no other EKG abnormalities) have to be for you to consider them significant or at least keep on you on "alert"? I have always heard the Q-wave being 1/3 of the amplitude of the QRS complex being the...

'400 chest compressions' procedure touted by Okla. EMS

Exactly, in an emergency situation, for people who have no training on how to handle such situations, we need quantifiable things. I don't think its dangerous in any way to give a number, as from a purely statistical standpoint, its VERY unlikely that any bystander will finish 400 compressions...

'400 chest compressions' procedure touted by Okla. EMS

Its close to impossible for an average person to do just about 2.5 compressions continuously for 3 minutes... I say its a good because its all about getting the message out to the public. The public won't help if they are unsure of what they are doing, or if they feel they will actually hurt...

'400 chest compressions' procedure touted by Okla. EMS

I am in favor of it, a huge barrier to bystanders helping is they fear the small details. It is understandable how a bystander could be worried over whether their CPR class taught 30:2 or 15:2 or 2 person vs 1 person, along with the whole mouth to mouth deal... Rid, I don't think the 400...

    Is This Normal?!

Kinda reminds me of the story that was all over the news couple months ago of the lady that died at the ER triage area, and EMS dispatch refused the calls to send medics to the ER...

    me vs doctor

Your point is valid, but atleast in terms of getting signatures for individual procedures, I think overwhelming majority of us here are surprised that such a requirement even exists... bstone, what year of college are you in?

    Who's good at statistics?

Do you mean in terms of car fatalities over the general population? Althought it isn't entirely a fair comparison. We can compare just in terms of chances of having a fatal accident per year. Its around .003% in chances of dying while riding bikes at the volcano based on 3 deaths out of...

    St. Louis Area Paramedics

Asclepius, Abbott EMS is a regional private service that covers all of St Louis. As a medic you will do mostly nursing home to ER, but Abbott does cover 911 for a few communities south of highway 64. As DT4EMS said, its a good place to start. St Louis County services are primary FF/Medic...
