Is there anything they could of done?

Yup. If someone held me at gunpoint and told me not to treat the patient. I would listen. Remember...Your safety, your partners safety and then the patient.

How many survived your EMT class?

It's been a while, but I think we started with somewhere around 30. By the end of the class we had about 20 people. Of the 20, I think 18 of us passed the state testing.

    I need help deciding?

I took my EMT-B when I was a high school junior. What I noticed, at least in my class, was that the few of us that were in high school had an easier going then adults who came back and took the class after being off school for a period of time. Just my experience. I also had to grow out of being...

    Dispatch BLS v. ALS

I have to agree with you. It was hammered into my head that I would almost certainly fail my state practical if I didn't ask for ALS intercept. The problem was that we always simulated ALS calls in a basic class because the calls that Basics handle really are not fun and exciting (generally and...

    Partially paralysed by a lovebite

Hmm. Add a question to suspected stroke victims now. "Has your partner left any hickeys on your body recently?"

    the 100% directionless thread

Currently enjoying the company of my fellow duty crew members as well as the crew from the MICU. Should be reading for environmental science. Or perhaps working on my christopher columbus paper. Sailed the ocean blue in 1492 should suffice I think. That's all anyone really cares about.

    Stuck on the wall

Wow. I feel privileged now. The longest I can recall waiting for a bed is about a half hour. I've never had to wait with a critical patient. Just wow. I'm amazed.

    now the waiting begins!!!

Check around at local community colleges. Thats where I found mine. County Fire schools are sometimes a good place too.

    BLS Automatic BP Cuffs

At my service, we've bounced around the idea of getting an automatic BP cuff for rehab, but ultimately we've been unable to find anything remotely suitable on the market. I'll echo the sentiments of others, manual is the way to go. Unless you have a medic with a lifepak there, and even then I...

    EMT-B vs. EMT-I

Perhaps their state is set up like PA's new system will be. We won't be able to go from EMT-B to Paramedic without bridging from EMT-B to Advanced EMT then from A-EMT to Paramedic.

Do you share work stories with your girl?

Since I've started running EMS, I've never really had a girlfriend whom could deal with hearing about the job. It's a different mentality then they possessed. Sometimes they will press and I'd tell them, but most times it ended up with them telling me they wanted me to stop doing EMS because...

    EMT-B straight into EMT-P School!!

I'll preface this with I'm not attempting to start any fights and that if you want to do it then go for it. Now...My general experiences with Medics who haven't spend time running as a basic has been not the greatest. In my experiences, they seem to be the kind of medics who think EMTs are only...

To Bag or not to Bag?

I don't think I would have bagged this patient based on the information provided. As others have stated, he appeared to be oxygenated well enough once placed on the non-rebreather. If he had been turning cyanotic thats another story, but based on the information you provided, I think you made an...

    Volunteer Paramedic?

Being part of a completely volunteer BLS organization, I completely agree. The level care provided by volunteers need to be the same as paid.

    Safety paranoid!!!

I figured out that I need to have fun because of the job I do. EMS is a serious profession and that can be very taxing on individuals. So whenever I'm not running call or on duty, I try to get out and have fun.

Car suicide takes out first responders.

Chief just sent out a warning e-mail. These chemical suicides took off in Japan. There are websites out there that give instructions to people who want to use chemicals. Most of them recommend that you post warning signs for the first responders. I know that if I roll up on an unconcious person...

    NRB Flow Rate

Yes. The textbook says 12-15 lpm when using a NRB. As you said though, the textbook is not gospel. However the lowest I've ever seen a NRB used is 10 lpm. Not sure if you guys carry nasal canulas. Seems that might have made more sense in this situation. Just my .02. Not criticizing anyone. Just...
