We never stop responding. There's been times when I'll go ahead of the rig in my SUV, just because I can get there faster/not get stuck.

This. You could always check around clinics and hospitals as well. It's not as 'glamorous' as being on the rig, but you'll still learn skills and patient communication. Especially in an ER, which would expose you to a lot of situations you would otherwise not see.
