Not a good look

I cannot imagine where on earth allows you to teach medical providers or treat patients. I shudder at thought, truly. To my knowledge you have never once provided a single iota of clinical knowledge to this forum.

I’m out.
What an interesting example of the topic at hand.. If I were to take this post out of context I’d think “wow this tigger guy is an unhinged ******* to go off on a longstanding member of this forum” much the same as seeing a 3 second video clip of a firefighter going off on a patient..

Alas, here we know the backstory, our lovely CCCSD has a long history of being abrasive and is definitely poking at you on this thread, eliciting the responses you’ve given him. My entry into this thread was curiosity on the backstory of the incident in the article..

You seem too be looking at this situation as purely black and white, wrong and right. I don’t think anyone actually agrees that you should cuss at a 10 year old, but on the flip side - several of us are trying to take a step back, peel back the layers of the onion, understand the causative factors, and show some empathy here.

Oh and by the way, I’m still actively involved in patient care and education.

It is not acceptable to explode at patients, especially pediatrics.
and yet
I’ve lost my cool a time or two, though nothing like this. And if it was on video and shown to my Chief, I’d expect to be disciplined.
So you admit you have lost your cool a time or two, but then state that it's never acceptable... sounds a little hypocritical if you ask me...

Now, I don't see anyone excusing the behavior... or saying what the provider did was appropriate. As a general rule, I don't think it's appropriate to yell at pediatric patients, however a frequent flyer who had an emotional breakdown because her phone was taken away by her mother (side note: why does a 10 year old even have their own phone?)... and the patient is combative, doesn't want to go, has a history of issues, and who knows how abusive she was to the provider before the cameras started rolling... Not cool what the chief said, and discipline is warranted, but until the root cause of this issue (with the patient, whatever they are) is resolved, I can see something similar happening again. And no, a single incident shouldn't destroy a 22 year career in public safety.

Full disclosure: I no longer treat patients, and am no longer teaching baby EMS providers. after 25 years, in urban, suburban, and rural areas, are a paid and volunteer provider, on both first responder suppression units and transport capable ambulances, I've done my time and moved onto new careers and hobbies. Just because I am no longer active in the field (other than the occasional confined space, water/dive rescue, or technical rescue situation), doesn't mean my opinion is any less valid than anyone else.

Extreme example - In the months leading up to this run, this guy has been working 100 hour weeks to support his family because his wife has been feeling terrible and unable to work. The day before this incident, this guys wife found out she had stage 4 cancer. The run before this incident was a 16 year old who shot himself in front of his father. On this incident on a frequent flier who’s throwing a temper tantrum because she had her cell phone taken away, this 10 year old screams “**** you, you piece of ****, I hope your wife dies and your kids hate you, give me my ****ing phone” - would you still be calling for this guys head?

Obviously an extreme example, but the fact is we have no context.

This was why I posted the article knowing full well some people wouldn't be able to get past just the headline.

Uh, you know all this to be true?

Uh, you know all this is true?
What part of 'extreme example' is difficult to understand? Nobody said this was the actual case, it was being offered as a possible hypothetical

Okay, how about we stay away from "hypotheticals"? What purpose does that serve?
because we don't know, yet certain people are convicting this provider without knowing all of the details, or any other items that are going on on his life. that was why it was clearly indicated as an extreme example, because there is a lot of missing context

No one is saying his actions were appropriate, however a single bad video clip shouldn't ruin a 22 year career, especially when there may be other factors that haven't been reported in the media.

It serves as a means to open your mind to possible alternatives so that you don't convict based upon headlines alone.
