Hey guys, so I have a simple question: Is there a difference between EMT-B and EMT-I? I'm trying to figure out what kinds of jobs I'll be able to apply for once I have my EMT cert, and I'm not sure if I'll have and EMT-B or EMT-I.

Thanks!

If you don't know, it's EMT-B. These distinctions should be/should have disappeared in new courses anyway. EMT-B has become EMT in the new curriculum, and EMT-I has become AEMT. EMT-I under the old standards were separated into I85 and I99, both of whom could start IVs and carried certain medications in addition to the basic.

Here is a very basic overview

Keep in mind though, that I85 and I99 have now been combined by NREMT into AEMT.

Also keep in mind, that what Basics, Intermediates, and Medics can do will vary from state to state, county to county, and even system to system.

And keep in mind in California, EMT-B is still an EMT-I (EMT one) in some cases.

You're referring to EMT-Basic vs EMT-Intermediate? Simply put, EMT-B does basically first aid stuff with oxygen, oral airways, and the like. EMT-I does "limited ALS" in that they usually can do IVs, a couple meds, and may or may not be able to orally intubate. Normally when you take an EMT class, you're learning to become the EMT-B. EMT-I can do everything a Basic can do, so if you have an "I" cert/license, you can apply for the "B" jobs.

The exact scope of practice does vary a little bit from state to state, we'll be able to give you better advice as to what you'll be able to do and what kind of jobs you'll able to apply to once we know at least the state in which you'll get certified and hopefully work.

If you are from Cali I believe they sometimes refer to EMT as an EMT-1 (one). I am sure someone can comment on this as there are a number of people here from CA.

Yes, California has/had their EMT-B's listed as "EMT-I" (Roman Numeral 1) and the "Intermediates" were/are known as EMT-II (Roman Numeral 2).

If your county still uses that designation. Many just use EMT now.

When you're asking questions on here if you ask about EMT-I you're going to get answers in regards to EMT-Internediate not EMT-"1".
