Just purchased a flip-up field guide for BLS, and man I wish I would have purchased one sooner. I am going to study it until January when my cert course starts. Not sure if that's really all that post worthy, but meh.

You should read Schwartz's principles of surgery.

I'd be willing to read whatever gave me some advanced knowlege before I started (besides my 20+ general ed credits + A&P under my belt).

Read a paramedic textbook.

You may not be able to do it, but understanding is the first step.

Are you taking the basic to paramedic course?

If so, I'd read and study the textbook you'll be using. Then, once you have the basic foundation laid, and you can pass the course... Start adding additional material.

He's taking a CERT first aid course.

Bryan, I think you are making a mistake taking a CERT first aid course instead of just getting your EMT.

From what I gather you are quite enthusiastic about this whole thing which is great but CERT is rarely activated and I think you would find more fulfillment in volunteer or per diem EMS.

I imagine you can still be part of the CERT team with an EMT certification than their first aid course.

Best of both worlds.

That book sucks.

Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery is way better.

Followed up with Fischer's Master of Surgery.

From past posts, I was under the impression he was in paramedic school... My mistake?

Hello I am currently persuing my associates degree in paramedicine from my local technical college. I'm planning on moving to Asheville, NC after that. I was wondering if there are good opportunities there. Thanks!

Actually my mistake.

Mistaked him for another new member I think.

For some reason I don't really trust the BLS field guide. You'll have to make your own choice, but you should be critical of any sources you use, for anything. Just because it's in a book doesn't mean it's right!

Why is that? BLS is basic life support, aka, advanced first aid. I think you'd be pretty safe with that.

Even as a basic, I carried an ALS field guide for the simple reason that the ALS had a better drug reference in it than the BLS. I used it to look up drugs patients told me they were taking to 1) make sure I spelled them correctly, and 2) to compare that with the HX the patient told me they had. Several times patients would forget to mention a condition that they had until I asked them about that drug specifically.

No worries! I am actually waiting a slot at my tech school for paramedic. I am getting my EMT-B while I wait so I can have some experience in the field before I would have otherwise.

True, but the information is so simplified I have a hard time trusting it! That's just me personally, I know a lot of people who like their field guides a lot
