Good Morning,
Just wondering how much does your training help when you are a new EMT, have any of you had doubts regarding your training? Did you learn as you became more experienced? I mean of course you did, but I don't think I am getting what I expected in my training course and I worry about the safety of my patients in the future. There is a course coming up at a local college this summer taught by a man I have heard great things about. I really want to take it, but I am broke and really can't afford it. So should I (if I pass the state exams) just make a go of it and hope for the best? I'm so confused...the EMT I did my first ride along with said the real world is nothing like school and another EMT at that base said it doesn't matter where you are trained. Thanks for any input, you guys are great!

1) training is/was/always will be important.

2) It definitely did not prepare me for some of the more difficult situations surrounding psychological emergencies/suicide, and times when I needed to be more of a social worker than EMT.

3) I will say that I found that my training prepared me to deal with medical emergencies. The first few calls were kinda intimidating, but once I fell back on my training found that I could handle situations well.

Thanks so much for responding to this thread. I guess I will try to scrounge up the money to take that other course. What matters to me most is patient care and I want to be confident in my ability. Just needed to think it over is all..........

If you want to be an EMT there is no way to avoid the training. I think you will definitely find it worthwhile wherever you go in life.

In applications to four year universities I think being an EMT made a big difference for me because I bring a set of experiences many others have never and will never have.

Are you saying you're currently taking an EMT course and not satisfied with it? So you're asking if you should take a second EMT course?

I just want to make sure I'm getting the gist of this.

Yes your gist is correct, I am currently in an EMT course. The course which will be offered in the summer is a more intense (their wording not mine) course and I felt it would behove me to learn all I can before facing a dire emergency. I feel it is a tremendous responsibility to have a life in my hands and to quote an Army commercial I want to be all I can me.. maybe I am an idealist, yes I know I am. But that's me. Sorry I have brought my Captain Bring down attitude to this forum. I'm too serious and I'll try to lighten up! Thanks everyone!!!:P

oh, crap. ignore what i said earlier. dont waste your time on another EMT class. if you are really hellbent on more school take a PHTLS, ITLS, or set of CE courses and go get some experience with people who know what they are doing.

Here's the thing, an EMT class is an EMT class. You're taught to meet a set of standard curriculum objectives. If you can meet those objectives and pass the psychomotor skills testing along with the computer adaptive testing, congratulations, you're an EMT.

You certainly don't need to take a second EMT class unless you fail out. My suggestion is ride along, get a job, get in the field and then meet and touch patients. If you can't do the job after doing that for a few weeks, maybe it's not right for you. But you can't judge whether you can "handle a dire emergency" until you're actually doing it.
