I've been looking into moving to NC from Ohio. Been a medic for 6 years. I've seen some job listings in Craven County. I can't figure out who actually provides EMS services though. There seems to be lots of EMS agencies listed in that county but I want to make sure I'm not going to apply for one that is just interfacility transport job. Any info on what the 911 Ems is all about there would help. Also looking into Brunswick county, seems to be the same thing. Thanks guys

Typically EMS in North Carolina is at the county level. Craven County is a little different.

Emergency Medical Providers: Bridgeton, CarolinaEast Medical EMS, City of Havelock, Cove City, Ft. Barnwell, New Bern-Craven, Township Seven EMS, and Vanceboro.

Private Providers: Johnston Ambulance Service, Tarheel Medical Service, Friendly Medical Transports and Crystal Coast Medical Transport (CCMT).

The Emergency Medical Providers are typically 911, with private providers providing 911 backup and IFT.

As a general rule, the county runs the EMS system. Some run it internally, others contract it out to a 3rd party system. Also, individual agencies are able to franchise their services (usually the municipal or regional EMS agency that want to continue to operate after the county was given the authority to work), once they meet the same standards put forth by the County.
