I am an EMT-in-training who will, if the world goes right, have her certifications by the end of this spring. I am moving from my small town to Pittsburgh for college in August, and would love to have a job in EMS (as compared to the waitress job I'll have to have if EMS doesn't work out.) I plan on applying to any and all companies that take EMT-Bs, but was wondering if anyone would have suggestions on which companies would be preferable? Or, any tips on applying? I
am moving at the end of August, when should I start sending in applications? Thank you!

First things first,, Get the EMT B State Certification done and out of the way. this way you have the cert in hand when applying for jobs.

When do you plan to move out to Pitt? Right after Graduation or towards the end of summer?

I would aim for Private based companies as IIRC the 911 side is locked up by Pittsburgh Fire & EMS, a good google search will help you along the way, There is a member on here from pittsburgh but I'm not too sure if he frequents the forum anymore. You'll get stuck doing alot of Non Emergency transports, along with maybe some wheelchair runs, Dosen't pay all that much but you might do better than waitressing.

Also I'm not to sure if your EMT Course requires it or makes it a part of the course, but take your NIMS 100,200,700,800. through the FEMA website. Also hazmat awareness which can be obtained online free too. Both courses are kinda dry but have some useful content.

Once you get your certification and cert # you will be able to log into Centrelearn (www.paprepared.net) and take the Bloodborne Pathogens & HIPPA compliance training most employers ask for these within the first few days of work, they are not very long and not difficult but once again kind of a requirement.

We have to take the 100 & the 700 for our local certs, which I've been putting off a lot. I might ask well do the others while I'm at it! Thank you for the advice about the paprepared courses, I had no idea those even existed.

If I remember correctly Pittsburgh EMS is all medics too.

Correct, but you don't have to go very far outside the city to find 911 services that run P-B, if pure IFT isn't your thing.

Or you could go to Carnegie Mellon and jog to "calls" with your awesomely fashionable jump kit

its there, however pa is looking to push for more "hands on continuing education credits" so getting con-eds via the site will probably be limited, however theres a ton of information and helpful advice on there that's useful. if when you need to get setup and your stuck with no assistance shoot me a PM i'll give you a hand.
