Hello all. I live in Kansas City missouri and have my missouri EMT-B License. I am wanting to move to Buffalo NY and work for Rural/Metro. I am filling out the paper work to get retroprocity in NY, but it says I need to prove need for a New York state certification like New York Employment. My question is how big a deal is that. I hope it's not a catch 22 of I can't get a job with out certification and i can't get certification with out a job. Please advice. thanks...Aster

I believe your talking about "reciprocity" a lot of people have asked about NYS and NYC reciprocity on here before, have you tried a search?

Call the NYS DOH.

Hi Aster. While New York is fairly straightforward in their Reciprocity process, they do require that you demonstrate a need for their certification. In your case, you do possess one of the valid reasons and that is to obtain employment.

Now it just so happens that the FDNY has presently opened their application filing period for EMT's which may demonstrate your need for their certification. This information can be found on their DCAS Monthly Exam Schedule located at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/employment/monthlyexamschedule.shtml

The application filing period began July 7, 2010 and is running until July 30, 2010. A NYS Department of Health EMT-B is a condition of employment

My advice is to inquire with New York State - Department of Health if this job opening will satisfy their justification for Reciprocity. Good luck!
