I got my EMT-B in March and I am starting my Paramedic course this fall. Since March, I have been unable to find a department to volunteer for. They are either paid firefighter/paramedic or they won't let me run for them because I don't live in their township. I am determined to get my Paramedic certification but I am really unsure with not having any experience under my belt prior to class. I feel like I am at a slight disadvantage? What should I do?

Get your Paramedic. Study A&P while you wait. Honestly you are better off in the opinions of many if you have no experience or as I like to call it bad habits when you start Paramedic.

You'll be fine starting medic without any experience. Just study and you'll do fine.

I think solid BLS experience puts you a little ahead of the pack during Paramedic.... but don't let not having any discourage you. You can do just as well without....

My only question would be have you ever had any experience working with the sick and injured. I think most people greatly benefit from experience in the field prior to taking on medic school. I am a firm believer in being a good solid basic before moving up the ladder to medic.

There are other ways of gaining experience as an EMT, you could try the ER Tech route. Did you do clinical time in the ER when you did your basic, if so check with that facility. You may need to broaden your horizons and look a little further away from home for work.

I don't agree about having zip experience but, I will agree that student with good study habits, who is in it for all the right reasons, will do fine regardless. Good luck.

You can definitely tell a student who has no experience over one who has lots... least its VERY evident in my class.

YEP...very evident in every class.

And, before anyone says that's what all the people who had experience before going to Medic think....I had none. Got mine as a very part time volly during, not before my Medic class. What I did have when I started is a child with multiple heart lung defects, a child that was a CVA patient with multiple impairments and a ton of direct care experience with hospice and cancer folks. Never made a nickle but, these were my greatest teachers! :)

Not in mine. There isn't any noticeable difference in grades or the practicals in the back between those with experience, and those without.

I did a lot of clinical hours in the ER and at the fire station. I had a lot of calls but to meet clinical requirements it had to be a transport to ER. When I completed my requirements I kept running until the last day of quarter (can not run unless a student).

Since I obtained my EMT-B in March I still study at least 3 days a week 2 hours a day. I practice drills with my coworker (whom also is an EMT-B). I read the case studies books. I also work with a Paramedic, he's my mentor and an aunt who is an LPN helps me with the physiology and anatomy part.
