Hello all,

I've been looking for a back issue of EMS magazine that contained an article related to medical reference books that focused on an application for the EMS setting. I've lost several of my back issues over the years and I was wondering if this may strike a cord with any of you. I believe the issue came out sometime in 07 or early 08. The article mainly discussed books used by med students in regards to identification and treatment of common diseases and their pathophysiology.

Also, if any of you have come across your own reference materials and would be willing to share that would be most appreciated. I'm always curious when I ask a patient about their past medical history and their reply is something out of the norm. I use to be fairly disciplined about following up at home on the net but as life gets busier things tend to fall through the cracks.

If I'm not mistaken this is my first post, although I stop in from time to time and browse through the various threads. I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to read and or respond and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Books used by med students to learn medicine?

Probably that list is going to include Harrison's Internal Medicine and Robbins and Cotran's Pathological Basis of Disease.

Yes, shocking isn't it. I was making the point that these are not books common to the prehospital setting but the application is there.

Harrison's Internal Medicine sounds very familiar and I think that was on the list, thank you.

Do you have an ipod/ iphone? I can refer some pretty sweet apps to you. If not then I can do some research for the best books in which you can pick up at a barnes and nobles, strands, or even borders.

Let me know!

Sweet! Thanks!

Ghost, No iphone or ipod at the moment. Right now I'm using a blackberry but i think this will be my last one. At some point I'll get an ipod, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

JPINFV, That's It, and you were right on the money with Harrison's. I actually got your reply on my BB early this morning at work and I picked up Harrison's from the library earlier. Great book and filled with a lot of info, but it's not exactly easy to carry. At over 2600 pages and 4 inches thick, it's a bit of a beast. I suppose thats what you get with an all inclusive medical book.

Thank you both for taking the time to help me out, it is very much appreciated.

Beat me too it. Also, "Bate's Guide to Physical Examination"

Thanks Rob,

I'll put it on the list. Looks like I'm quickly getting behind in my reading. Hopefully, all the texts are not fine print like Harrison's.

Harrison's is one of the most useful textbooks I have, aside from "Pathologic Basis of Disease".

Yeah I use a blackberry as well but have my ipod on hand if needed. I also downloaded a bunch of PDF's and Documented books if you'd need any let me know. May not have an up-to-date (2009-2011) version but they are very useful.

PM me if anything and I'll send you a quick list of what I got. This goes for anyone who needs any extra resources. I'll do what I can to help.

Sounds good Ghost, I'll try to catch up with you later tonight. I've got to get ready for my shift right now. If tonight is anything like last night I'll talk to you tomorrow. B)
