Hi there everyone. I am a six year serving paramedic who recently got a new job up in the Canadian north as a community care medic. I will be working with LPNS MDs and a medly of other health professionals while up north.

I am wondering if anyone else has had the experience of transferring from a primarily emergency based role to a primary care one (ie conventional EMS to clinic based medicine) who was willing to share some tips.

I am specifically wondering which skill areas you felt a paramedic could study and improve to be more effective in in a primary health care setting. Are there any books I could read or courses I could take? I have worked for a year previously on a medical integrated team that gave blood, performed test collection, performed wound care etc. however I did not stay on my previous team long enough to truly become experienced in this area and any tips would be hugely appreciated.

I had to expand my knowledge of chronic diseases and pharmacology. I doubt the books I used are still in print. 😊

Just curious what your role will be? If you’re truly interested in changing roles like this (no shame in it at all), you’re probably better off finding a medic to RN bridge and working that way. Down the line you could do NP and really shine in that setting with your background.
