Hey Guys and Gals,

I just joined a Volunteer Ambulance Corp. last night as a Junior. Since here in New York you cant become an EMT with a Fire Dept. until 18 and with this corp. you can go into a EMT-B class at 17. I love it so far.

Never been on an Ambulance before last night.(Ski Patrol doesnt use them, our ambulances are "toboggans") We do trainings and run on crews on weekends, along with weekly meetings.(Much better then the JR. Fire Dept. they just wash trucks and pack hoses)

I will go into a Certified First Responder course and then when I turn 17 in 9 months become a full-member and go into an EMT-B course.

Congratulations.

Sounds fun! Keep us updated!

good for you!

Question - are youi allowed to start EMT school immediatly after your 17th birthday, or are you allowed to enroll in an EMT class provided you will be 18 by the test date?

Medicstudentjon,

Good question, to the best of my knowledge you can be enrolled and finish before your 18th birthday. They told me they can enroll me in the next class following my 17th birthday, so I would be done if that happened before my 18th birthday.

In NY you have to be 18 to take the State written exam, so in theory you could start your EMT class the day you turn 17, and take the practicals, but you can't finish until you're 18. Most people I know try to time it so that they turn 18 right around the end of class so they don't loose their knowledge and skills while waiting for the written exam.
