How to work for NYC Hospital EMS?

What and how much experience do hospitals typically ask for in NYC for EMTs? Is 6 months IFT and some Volunteer work enough? If I don't see job postings online does that mean they are not hiring? Is walking in with a resume talking to a supervisor or HR person better? Does having a referral (someone you know who already works for that hospital) help any?
