How to Differentiate the difference between metabolic acidosis/res acidosis?

Hello everyone I am having just the hardest time understanding how to tell the difference between respiratory acidosis, and metabolic acidosis, and the same thing for the alkalosis'...... Can someone please explain to me how to tell the difference? Thank you kindly

You mean theory, or actual practice?

In theory (as in, the equations), I was taught if CO2 is first, it's respiratory, and if H+ is first, it's metabolic.
