Gathering of Eagles 2013

Always some decent presentations and always some that leave you scratching your head. However, these "Gathering of the Eagles" seem so much like some weird medical director circle jerk. The title of the event is obnoxious and the premise of having medical directors from large cities as being an indicator for someone being an "eagle" is a little absurd. (I don't understand how anyone can take C. Crawford Mechem seriously.)

It's self-titled as the EMS State of the Sciences Conference. The "Gathering of Eagles" moniker came from others.

The heterogeneity of EMS in this country has given us a tremendous number of shoddy systems and baffling irregularity. The silver lining is the potential for unique and varied innovation, much of which is presented at this sort of event.

Large systems have the resources and werewithal to try things and gather data, and frankly, the type of medical directors to actually bother. It's not unlike major academic tertiary hospitals -- there's certainly downsides to such places, and you might not want them dating your sister, but they're doing stuff that the local urgent care isn't.

Don't kill the messenger.

It's just a quick look to see what's being thought of around the country...

Yes, some of them seem like they're put together haphazardly just to have something to present when they get there.

Annual ego-stroking. Surely.

C. Crawford who?

Some pretty cool stuff out there. Some...not so cool.

They only get 10 minutes. It's like the Lightning Round on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me.
