From what I've heard, Basics work mostly events and standbys. To be back on a rig you need to be an intermediate or medic. EMTs working at the casinos as EMT/Security make about $14-15/hr.
I don't know what the starting wage for the field is, but I was talking to a couple former Medicwest medics a couple weeks ago and one of them was saying that the cost of living was low enough out there that EMTs were buying houses.
Out there there's three companies. MedicWest, AMR owned, (Which I could devote an entire post on how much I hate their new rig design), AMR itself, and Community Ambulance.
Whatever your end goal is, keep at it and continue your education. Don't stop at being a basic.
I highly second the motion, if EMS is your passion, to make the move to Texas.
