Hello everyone, I'm new to these forums and have a few questions about getting a job as an EMT in King Country, Washington.

I'm currently a college student in Michigan and am getting my NREMT-B this spring. However, I live in King Country and will be returning in May till September. I really would like to get a job as a basic this summer. I know King County makes it pretty easy if you're NREMT certified right? you just have to fill out some paperwork and take their disease control class?

I'm basically wondering where I should look for employment. I'm looking to get as many 911 contacts as I can, pay is not an issue, I have a good job during the school year, and I'm perfectly willing to volunteer. Obviously, I wouldn't mind getting paid but I don't to end up doing BLS IFTs all day. Should I be looking private or see if any fire departments will take me as a volunteer? or am I just out of luck?

Search for Seattle EMT and king county EMT.

Everything you'd want to know about working in King County has even covered several times.

Good luck.

Thanks, I actually already did that. A lot of the threads were very helpful. I guess I should be more specific. As far as I can gather, the private companies (AMR, Rural/Metro and triMed are already very selective and probably wouldn't want someone who is only looking for a job for the summer. Is that right?

That's why I was looking into volunteering. I don't really have any interest in SAR which is why I was looking at volunteering. Are there any groups that hire for out of district? The only one I found that was relatively close to where I am is fall city? I was considering just asking at some of the agencies that usually require residency and say I'm willing to do just about anything and work full time. Do you have any other ideas for agencies to look into volunteering with?

Your biggest problem will be getting affiliated. By the time you find an agency willing to take you and you get affiliated to obtain your Washington cert, summer will be all but over. It can take upward of 8 weeks to have your card processed. (I think they use a carrier pigeon to move the paperwork between Seattle and Olympia)

Try wild waves in Federal Way. I know they hire EMTs for the summer. I did a few years there a a part tiner. Not a lot of calls, but fun.

District 44 and district 20 both take volunteers, both test to gain entry and you may have a hard time doing it just for the summer.

TriMed may be your best bet.

Wow that's a really long time.. If it really takes 8 weeks I don't think I'll really be able to do anything during the summer. Any tips on speeding it up? Is it even worth really applying to places this summer if it takes so long?

And thanks for all the good ideas, I'll start applying like crazy as soon as I get my certification.

Nothing speeds it up. Talk to some of the agencies and see if they'll help. Try Josie at at TriMed and explain your situation... Maybe they'll help. Doubtful, but worth a shot.

Unfortunately, he's right. The state will tell you that getting your cert takes "6-8 weeks". I've had friends get it in 4 or 5 weeks though, but that still doesn't leave you with much time.

I work for TriMed right now and I've volunteered for District 44 in the past. TriMed doesn't want part-time or seasonal employees. Besides, you wouldn't have much time anyway, we have a 2 week orientation AFTER you get your state cert and even then you'd probably be on day car for awhile, which is IFT's. District 44 only does two recruit classes a year, Spring and Fall. You have to go through fire academy and it takes quite awhile. I'm not sure about other FD's but the ones I've heard about will all take some time. And again, you still have that waiting period for your state cert.

Honestly, have you though about staying in Michigan and working there over the summer and trying to keep some part time EMT work while you're in school? If you're serious about working as an EMT, it's going to take some commitment and sacrifice, as I'm sure you already know.

Good luck!
