hey
my name is mike and i have begun EMT-B classes about 4 weeks ago,and up till yesterdays retake of exam #1.. i was highly excited to take Saturdays exam #2, but at this point im truly scared out of my mind.
i failed the exam with a 74%. i have to study about 10 more chapters for the up comming exam, i AM soaking up the information, but obviously not reapplying it to the exam. this exam will determine if i am allowed to continue this course. we only have 4 more weeks to go in prep for National, and im fully focused and posied for this carrer. i want to finish out this course. "I" beleive that im studying correctly and very hard, but im also scared to fail this exam so needless to say...............................................................................................................

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive fallen an i cant get up .!!!!:unsure::unsure::unsure:

Not to be smart, but do you know how to study?

First, read through the chapter and understand the big picture in it. Then go back for the details.

Don't just read to memorize, read to understand.

Take some time to think about what you are reading, don't just try to power through it to get through it.

Tests are like patients.

None of them care what you did on the last one or when the next one will be. It only matters what you do for them.

and yeah the sad thing is ....that excatly what im doing trying to get the big picture and go back for the details....im also using the emtb.com website to study more, so truley in not tring to memorize the info, but it happens, and i do know how to study, but i think i may need some other suggestions as well

thank you the more the better

Have you tried to explain what you have learned to somebody else?

kinda......but its the wife and she is an accountant...so she's to literal to want to hear what i have to say....plus she has the attention span of a squirel.
but i have been attending my study groups before class starts 2days a week

i am a sponge ...kepp the suggestion comming ......
this is what i WANT to do....and WHAT im GOING TO DO .....i just need some help........this time i CANT do it all by myself

Have you tried writing your own summary of each chapter?

Or getting a different book, that better fits your learning style?

yeah a different book sound good...i have written a summary, maybe i should re-asses how im writting it....

what book are you using?

Get in a study group right now. I'm in the middle of my Basic course and I'm in a study group. One big reason why I ace my tests is due to the study group. How's your anxiety levels during tests? Are you the first one to finish? I always feel competitive when I'm testing and it has bitten me on the *** a lot. During the test SLOW DOWN, take a deep breath and carefully read each question. Don't read too much into the questions. There have been times when I missed a question that I actually knew because I didn't read the question correctly. Often I miss key words such as "except", "always" & "never". Take your time and if notice any particular area that you are struggling with talk with the instructor and your classmates. Ask questions in class. Don't worry what others in the class might think about you, ask the questions you need to so you can fully grasp the material. Does that help? Hope so and good luck.

Don't, DON'T overthink the questions. I don't know how your tests were/are, but for mine, half the time was slap on O2 and get them to the ER.
Also, speak to your instructors, they are there to answer your questions.

I have to study by making flash cards of all the important stuff. Signs & Symptoms, definitions, treatment, and numbers to remember. I finished my EMT-B class with about 400 flash cards.

Most EMT test are set up with questions that ask you which is the MOST correct, this meaning that all of the answers could be correct, but they want you to pick out which one is the MOST correct.

Good luck to you. Just keep studying and don't forget to take breaks. Your mind can only take so much at one time.

Here are some things I did --maybe they will help.

Most importantly, I took careful notes in class and re-read them after class, jotting down questions that I thought of later.

I averaged about four hours of out of class time for each hour in class. So if you are in class 8 hours a week, figure on 30 or so hours outside of class for studying.

In my class, we ran a study group that met once or twice a week on different days than class. That way, we were forced go over the data after we'd been away from the lecture for a while.

My class was very active in the actual lectures, questioning, even debating some points. The people who were the most active, for the most part, did the best on exams.

Hope that helps.

I had a set of notecards for each chapter in the book. They were of great value to me and my study partners when crunch time came.

Do you have a couple study partners?

wow that's amazing whoever studies 4 hours out of class for every 1 in class! A big part of test taking is knowing the test. Does your instructor write the test? Are the questions randomized from the txtbook? Any essays? For ex, if you know that the questions come right from the book, study mostly your book and any resources/workbooks that came with it. The emtb website is good with facts, but u deff shouldnt be studing from it unless you're using tht book. Hope this helps!
