I know I have to work for a year as basic before I can go to medic school. My question is, does this have to be with an ambulance service or do other EMT jobs count? I have an interview at a hospital next week, the job is "tech aide/transporter." I'm still fuzzy on the job description, but as I understand it the job is to move pediatric patients around the facility and drive them between facilities when necessary--but I don't know if that's on a full BLS rig, wheelchair van or what. Would this job (if I get it) give me EMT hours?

Depends on the school. Some schools want 911 expereince. Some schools want any ambulance experience. Some schools want any experience that has you using your EMT skills. Look at the admissions requirments for the schools you are currently wanting to attend.

OK, thanks for the response. I think there are only 3 paramedic programs in my area so I should just call each of them and find out. I thought the requirement was spelled out by statute so there would be specific definitions of "EMT experience."

I really hope it's not 911 experience that's required, that would be pretty tough for me to get as a basic here. I don't live close enough to serve on any vollie squads, and our 911 provider is pretty tough to get with as a basic (because that's obviously where everyone wants to work.)

Just because a requirment might be spelled out by statute doesn't mean that they can't have requirments above the minimum requirment.
